“WHAT’S the gospel?” the man asks me. “Tell me,” he grinned, “Mr Preacher.” “The Gospel is the good news,” I replied, anticipat
ing his next question and noting the twinkle in his eyes. “What’s the good news?” He was teasing, yet at the same time wished to
hear my reply. “The good news is that you are a child of God and
He loves you, despite knowing all about you and the things about which you are ashamed.” He swallowed haraand gulped as his Adam’s apple settled. “How do you know?” “Because Jesus came, God in man, from heaven to tell us and give us a better idea about what God is
like.” “Who told you?” “I was fortunate in my school teachers, as my first
school was a Church school.” “You heard the Gospel as a kid?” ‘Yes, but I didn’t fully grasp the good news until older people answered my questions, as I am
answering yours.” “How did you come to understand the good news? I
never did!” “Just as we are all different, we have varying con
ceptions of God and we can be all wrong in our think ing. We have not got the capacity to conceive in our minds the vastness of God, for instance. The God we are contemplating is far more w’onderful and much greater than our finite minds can understand, yet we can have a personal relationship with Him if we think of what we know of Jesus.” “He was too good to live, so they killed him. Didn’t
they?” “Yes. They could not bear to have Him knowing
about their shabby hypocrisies and their money-mak ing swindling of the pilgrims.” “He rose again from the dead and appeared to the
disciples. Didn’t He?” ‘Yes. They believed because they saw Him, but He
says that we who believe without seeing Him can be richly blessed.” “Sure! I know. I was just checking. Thanks!” He
grinned — and went his way. t

Party time as 100-year-old recalls events of yesteryear
NOT many people can recall Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, but Lizzie Sanderson has vivid recollections of the great day. N o t only that, she
remembers the soldiers returning from the Boer War, stage coaches, and the coming of some of the things younger folk take for granted — the aero plane and the motor car. And on Monday, when
Mrs Sanderson, who lives at Lowfield House, Clith eroe, celebrated her 100th birthday, she received a telegram from Queen Vic toria’s great, great-grand daughter — the present Queen. She also received a let ter of congratulations from
Secretary of State, Peter
Lilley, and a visit from C l ith e ro e Mayor and Mayoress Coun. and Mrs Howel Jones. Mrs Sanderson received
a large, framed, portrait photograph of herself from her family and the staff and residents of the resi dential home, where she came to live in 1988, as w e l l as a copy o f an “Advertiser and Times” from the year of her birth, 1893. Times have certainly
changed during Mrs Sand erson’s long life, but she has remained a devoted Ribble V alley “ lass.” Apart from a couple of years at Ramsbottom, she has lived all her life in the Ribble Valley.

THE Ribble Valley public can now go to Ribchester to see Buckingham Palace — albeit in miniature — at
Ribchester’s Museum of Childhood. The exhibit has become topical since the opening of
the royal palace to the public and organisers say that there is little point in paying £8 to visit the real thing, when the minor version can be seen in the
Ribble Valley. Also included in the mini-display are models of
the Coronation Coach, the Crown Jewels and the marching bands of the Coldstream Guards and The Lifeguards.

LANCASHIRE’S first woman detective inspector — Clitheroe-born Miss Wendy Walker — has left Blackburn CID to work for the Lancaster Police
Force. Miss Walker, a former pupil of Clitheroe Royal
Grammar School, went to Blackburn in 1991 as a uni
formed inspector. Within nine months she took over as detective inspector of Blackburn’s CID, commencing work on
several major investigations. Miss Walker commented that she was looking forward to working in a new area.
W ork in focus
A CLITHEROE photographer has put herself in the frame with an exhibition at the town’s library. Mrs Maureen Braeewell, of Balmoral Avenue, is
exhibiting her photographs of local scenes until Sep
tember 25th. She has lived in Clitheroe most of her life and
studied for a B.A. in photography. Mrs Braeewell works mainly in black and white,
which she prints and tones herself, and occasionally in ultra-fast colour to achieve a more “painterly” effect.

After marrying Co-op

Tragically, her daugh

children, who in their turn h a v e p r o v id e d s ix great-grandchildren.
She has a sister, Mrs Mar garet Kilpatrick (93), who lives in Waddington.
A keen member of vari

fold at Trinity Church. Now she takes communion at Lowfield House.
