with Five Mystical Songs by K. Vaughan Williams, tile words of which bv (iconic Herbert, a 17th
centnrv religious poet. Soloist Daniel Howard (baritone) was in superb form and made the most of all the nuances that the composer provides. It is for the most part some what restrained music, the soloist being backed up by quiet singing from the choir, which sounded very
effective. The fourth item, a set
ting of the words "Come, my way, my t ru th , my ' life.” is for the soloist only and the final item, entitled "Antiphon,” a set ting of ) the gre at words which begin “Let all the world in every corner sing." It is a riot of notes calling for * much expression from the choir which was, on the whole, very competently ; managed. Both soloist anti c h o i r r e c e iv e d g r e a t
applause. Nigel Gaze was the •
organist and so had the responsibility of translat
ing the orchestral accom paniments to the choral works to organ music, a difficult task at which ire is very experienced. He also provided th r e e organ solos: the charming “Vil- ianella" try John Ireland, then a quiet piece of his own ent i t led " ( 'unt i l ," based on the Irish hymn tune "Slane." This piece was published this year and is sure to grow in popularity. Tile first part of the pro

mance of tile Finale ol S o n a t a "C 'e l t i c a ” by diar ies Stanford. After the interval came
a performance of Nadel’s fifth Candos Anthem, a most exciting piece not heard all that often. Tenor . John
F.den made his first appearance with the choir and had three solos to per- ■ form, including "O come, let us worship and fall down" and "The Lord preserveth the souls nt the s a i n t s , " w h i c h t ll e audience appreciated. Sally Coates, always a
welcome visitor, sang with great aplomb the beautilul solo, “O magnify tile Lord and worship Him upon His holy hill." The choir pro vided some lively part singing, ending with the chorus "Tell it out among the heathen that the laird King." The concert came to an
end with a performance of I’a r r v ’s “ Blest pai r ol siren's." full of beautiful melodies ami dramat ic ch an g e s of mood and volume which were all well managed, br inging the concert to a triumphant
