c h a rm LITTLE Adam Travis is a pei'I'eet little charmer — and he has a certifi cate to prove it! Sporting a red how-

tie, high wing collar and an impish grin, three- year-old Adam, of See- dall Avenue. Clitheroe. stole the show.at a Jack n’ Jill competition during

his September holiday at P o n t i n ’ s Middle ton Towers Holiday Camp at Moreeambe. The competition was

to find the smartest little lad and lass in separate comeptitions for the girls and hoys, bul looking the part wasn’t the only- requirement, as each contestant had to recite the “Jack and Jill” nur sery rhyme as well. A n d A d a m , w h o

attends Bright Street Nursery in Clitheroe,

proved equal to the task. “He surprised us all by being word perfect,” said p r q,u d m u m J a n e t Travis. He received a hand

puppet, toy crocodile and c e r t i f i c a t e for his success._______________

Entertained by dialect expert

A H UM O R O U S talk entitled “A Lancashire

Miscellany” was given bv Bonita Moore to the Ribble Valley Family History and Heraldry

Society. Mrs Moore, a former librarian from Oswaldtwis-

tle, appeared in the television programme "Homo Northwestus” earlier this year and is a leading light in the preservation of Lancashire dialects. Much of her time is spent visiting elderly peo

ple in the county, gathering material for her hooks, the first of which was published five years ago. About 600 tapes of dialect speech have been recorded and a number of amusing anecdotes were told of occur rences in bygone days (including Chatlnirn and Downhani). A section of a recording was played, starring 89-

year-old Annie, who was expounding on Fleetwood Market, past and present. “It ’s sicknin,” she admon

ished, "alius alterin’ tackle.” A recitation of the poem “Snows on Pendlc,” taken

from one of the publications, was given as a finale and chairman Joyce Winter thanked the speaker. At the next meeting, the speaker will be Mr P.

Cunliffe on the subject “The overseers of the poor, thetsurveyors, and the constables’ accounts of

- Waddingtfm.” - This should prove enlightening for anyone

interested in local history. The venae is Clitheroe Cricket Club on October 13th. at 7-30 p.m. Non-mem bers will be welcome and further details may be obtained from secretary Anne Mamlsley (0254 826291).
