ownership and the trend looks set to continue. A MORI poll conducted in Ju ly among the nation’s

18 to 25-year-olds showed that 83% of those ques t io n ed c o n s id e r h om e ow n e r sh ip a “ sound investment.” In fact, the pros and cons of renting against buying

your own home are currently the subject of much speculation among young people. In weighing the arguments for and against, there

are different factors to consider, but when you really get down to it, buying a new house — NOW — is the best option. No one is claiming that by buying a house in 1992 you are going to get rich instantly, but, in purely

economic terms, lower mortgage rates, lower house prices and a rise in real earnings mean that houses are more affordable now than at any time during the last 10 years.

There is also a large range of special mortgage

assistance schemes available to reduce monthly pay ments still further and, with a vast range of proper tie s on the market, buyers are in a very strong negotiating position. I f you rent a house, you may have a roof over your

head, but it ’s not your own. You will be making monthly payments to a landlord, money on which you will see no return, and you will have nothing tangible to show for your money when you have out grown the accommodation. By buying a property it becomes YOUR home. Ask

yourself this: i f buying a house was not such a good idea, then why do landlords do it?

CLITHEROE estate agent Stephen Hatton remembers, among other things, the first

terraced house in the town to sell for £1,000! Not surprising for a man who started his estate
