town’s former jail and at the bottom of the street is the famous Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, founded in 1554 bv Charter of Queen Mary and King Philip. Over the years the school has grown in stature and in October, 195)0, the Queen made her first ever official visit to Clitheroe to open the newly-completed sixth form centre there.
