Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, December 13th, 1990 3 SONGS FROM THE SHOWS DELIGHT AUDIENCES

CALDERSTONES Revue and Dramatic Society attracted large audiences to its “Showtime Jubilee” production — a medley of songs from various musicals compiled for the 40-strong group by producer John Griffiths and musical director Alan Robinson. “It was an

extremely successful production which sent the audiences away whistling and singing the songs they had heard,” said society chairman Mr Terry Dilworth. It was essentially a

team effort, with no individual star performers, but special praise belongs to children of the chorus, who excelled ' when they presented a selection of numbers associated with famous cartoon characters and Disney films. The society will

soon soon be busy again, rehearsing for its next musical, Calamity Jane,” and

it is also planning to present Joe Orton’s play, “The Butcher’s Son,” later in the year.

BRIDGE CLUB

THERE was no meeting of Clitheroe Bridge Club on Wednesday, so this week’s hand is taken from another occasion. North played in four snades,

and after a club lead it looked as if 12 tricks were there for the taking, provided the trumps broke two-two. But when west failed to follow

to the second round of spades, north realised he had a problem. If he took a third round of spades, losing to east’s queen, he was then going to lose a heart and two or three tricks in dia monds, as there would be no trump in dummy to control the diamond suit. The road to safety was to

force out east’s last spade by playing on clubs. East could take his queen of spades at any time, but the defence could only make two more tricks — one in each of the red suits. North’s second diamond was ruffed in dummy and his third went away on the clubs.
