20 CLOSE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE from the Revd Rodney Nicholson, vicar of St. Paul’s, Lou> Moor.

“I’m tired of hearing about ‘the real meaning of Christmas’. Can’t we, for goodness sake, enjoy ourselves without feeling guilty about it?”. We can sympathise with this sentiment for so often the church can seem to be telling us to be serious when we want to be happy, and light hearted. It needs saying loud and clear that the Christian message at Christmas and always is one of joy: good news of great joy, as the angel told the shepherds. But it’s about real joy as opposed to superficial merrymaking. Real Christmas joy has two sides to it. First, it doesn’t let us down with a bump on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. If we are captivited by a person, Christ himself, rather than just by a festival, we can find we have Christmas in our hearts - and this goes on beyond the twelve days. That means making it our business to know Christ better and to worship him faithfully in the company of others — the church. Second, real Christmas joy is experienced in giving. It is almost obscene to indulge ourselves on and around the birthday of the Christ who was bom in a hovel, without extending our hospitality to others. One way of doing this could be to give a particular proportion of our spending on food and drink on Christmas Day to some cause, such as Christian Aid (it can be paid in to the Christian Aid’s account at the TSB, Clitheroe - account no. 07570S17) or to the Rumanian orphans’ appeal. May we know the joy of receiving from Christ and the joy of giving to Christ this Christmas time.
