Move for higher
allowance AN increase in local coun- c il l or s ’ a t te n d a n c e allowances is now being recommended. Members of the Ribble
Valley Council’s Finance and General Purposes Sub-committee this week recommended an increase
from £18.25 to £19.50, which still has to be rati fied by the full council. A move by several
members of the committee to keep the old allowance was rejected by five votes to four. The committee heard
that the increase was below inflation, but Conn. Geoffrey Ainsworth (Clay- ton-le-Dale) and Coun. John Cowgill (Clitheroe) said that the present allowance was adequate. Coun. Mrs Sue Lea
(Longridge) said she favoured the increase because there was a dan ger that people would bo deterred from standing as councillors if it meant they would lose money by attending meetings. Chairman Coun. Bill
Bowker (Chipping), agree ing, reminded members that it was up to them whether or not they applied for the maximum allowance.
