the look on the face of the angler tells it all. The passing of a fishing season is like the passing of an old and faithful pet, to be mourned and remembered. We stop and chat for the last time to our fellow anglers, reliving the experiences of the season, of fish caught or lost, whichever the case may be. We discuss the season and any news or gossip along the riverbank. Some of these anglers we will not see until the

they are prepared to face the rigours of winter to fish the stillwaters which remain open all through the year. These waters arc stocked during the win ter and, if the weather is mild, some good sport can be had. On some days, the fish will rise to a dry fly on the surface. These fisheries arc now stocking with triploid rainbows, which are sexless and bred to retain their condition throughout the year. They remain silvery coloured all year round, so gone are the days of dark coloured fish, soft-fieshed and oozing with mill or roe. Other anglers try for the lady of the streams, the

But we are fortunate, living close to the river and always in contact with its moods, like a doctor with his finger on the pulse. I’ve gone through many days’ fishing in pre vious Octobers without being bothered by leaves catching the fly as it fishes the pools, but on some days this season every cast brought a pull on the line as a big sycamore leaf caught the hook to give the feeling of a salmon taking the fly. One year, I remember, it was late November before the leaves began to fall, but this summer has been so wet they have decayed and rotted away, and the strong winds shook the trees bare.
