No licence for lorry
A WHALLEY haulage contractor was fined £35 with £12 costs after plead ing guilty at Clitneroe Magistrates’ Court to driving a lorry without an excise licence. Andrew Ronnan (32), of
Church Lane, was said to have driven a lorry along the A59 at Barrow in November with an excise licence that had expired at the end of July. Ronnan told the court
that he had bought the lorry in October and before being stopped had posted off an application for the tax disc, but a postal strike had delayed its arrival at the tax office.

Launch of fourth watch
scheme
A NEIGHBOURHOOD watch scheme has been launched in the Moorfield area of Whalley following the success of watches in the Mitton Road area of the village, at ■ Wiswell, and most recently in C l i th e ro e ’s Hentnorn area. The reaction of Henth-
orn residents to their scheme has particularly delighted police Communi ty Affairs Officer Sgt Len Mooney. All 70 contact people
have attended the two meetings held so far and another will take place to morrow. Ultra-violet mar kers will be redistributed and scriber-type markers for metal objects, bought from local contributions, will be handed out. Sgt Mooney said: “The
respon se from these people has been incred ible, an excellent show of enthusiasm. The meetings allow us to exchange ideas, hopefully solve problems and reiterate the theme of crime pre vention.” Leaflets have already
been circulated in the Moorfield area, covering about 90 houses, and a meeting has been held with contact people.

FRIENDSHIP EVENING
Exciting USA trip ahead
A TRIP of a lifetime to the American Mid West, arranged under a rare
exchange scheme, awaits 20 lucky students from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.
Excitement is mounting
this week as the party of fifth and sixth-formers and three members of staff make final preparations for departure day next Friday on their history making tr ip to West Union, Iowa. It is unusual in that the
school, which is linked with North Fayette High School, is one of only two in Britain to have set up Anglo-American exchange
schemes. The Clitheroe students,
who played host last sum mer to a party from North
F ay e tte , will have the wonderful opportunity of experiencing American life at first hand, in the homes of their USA counter p a r ts , plus the added bonus of seeing some of the most sp e c ta cu la r sights in North America. The visitors, who are
c u r r e n t ly s tu d y in g Government and politics for either O-level or A-le- vel, also hope to improve their knowledge of Ameri can politics with a visit to the sta te capital, Des Moines, and meetings with the S t a t e G ov ern o r , Speaker of the State Par liament and the Attorney General. Headmaster Mr Clive
Darley is delighted that CRGS, which has also established links with F r e n ch and German schools, is one of the pio-

WADDINGTON parish councillors hope to have the village recreation field fitted out with vandal- proof seats made of metal and fibreglass, to replace

was a piece up on his opponent but on board 1 Andrew Ct was level in material and needed to force a win. After three hours play, adju

next to bottom of the third divi sion but is in very little danger of being overtaken by Lucas, the bottom club. Clitheroe B still has two, games to play to finish its season, away to Tot- tingham B and. home against Division Three leaders Bury.

David Michael Crook and Frances Elizabeth Crook.
Originally, Holden, an
agricultural auctioneer with a Preston firm, had intended to enter a not guilty plea to summar; charges of assault to eac party, causing actual bodily harm. In respect of those
charges, prosecuting sol icitor Mr Alistair Nisbet said that if the Bench was minded to make a bind ing-over order, he would offer no evidence regard ing the assault of Mr Crook and withdraw simi lar allegations of assault on Mrs Crook. The court was told that
on New Y e a r ’s Eve, Holden, a Guild Club member, had offered to work as a relief steward behind the bar to enable Mr and Mrs Crook to go out for the night. They had asked Holden
to lock up and put the keys through their home letter-box once closing time had arrived. But on their return in the early hours they discovered lights on at the club and several people still inside. T emp e r s b e twe e n
Holden and Mr and Mrs Crook became frayed and all three received cuts and minor bruises in the ensu ing disagreement. Since then, they had
calmed down. Mr and Mrs Crook were still steward and stewardess and Mr Holden was still a Guild Club member.
