A COLLISION occurred at a road junction because the driver’s view was blocked by a van. This was stated at Clith-
eroe Magistrates’ Court when Maitrayee Bhatta- charaya (40), of Croasdale Drive, Clitheroe, was fined £60 with £12 costs, after she admitted driving without due care and attention. Mr William B e r ry ,
representing her, said that at the time she was taking her youngest child to school. She drove down Carlton Place, but as she was about to turn into Peel Street her view was obstructed by a van turn ing up the street. She pulled out, not see
ing the other car. Her vehicle was a write-off and she and her child were treated for minor injuries in hospital.

PUPILS of Ribblesdale School, Clitheroe; have been busy raising money for charity. A fourth-year community studies, group has raised £42 for the Wendy Haworth Asthma Trust by planning and organising its own small sponsored events. The community course lasts for 12 weeks and
trains pupils in a wide range of skills such as catering, motor vehicle maintenance, computers and home maintenance. It is organised by Mrs Christine Snape as part of
a City and Guilds pre-vocational programme. Pupils have also" helped in areas of the community by visiting old or disabled people and by assisting mothers with young children.
It has proved very popular and, in addition to
helping people, pupils have to record their visits, plan for the future and complete log books.
Another group of pupils, after being involved in a
bob-a-job scheme which raised £140 for Help the Aged, volunteered to do a sponsored swim to raise more money.
Rachel Potts raised £70 on the swim. The 'Ribbles dale Pool roped off a lane of the baths so that the pupils were uninterrupted and three mothers counted the lengths!

played, at all tables except two, in one heart by north, making seven or eight tricks. At one table west played in three dia monds going two light, but at one table tne bidding was as follows:
1H — — 1NT 2H — — —
After north has opened the
bidding with one of a suit, fol lowed by two passes, a modern convention is that a bid of one no trump shows 10-13 points with no five card suit anti not neces sarily a stop in the suit opened. With 14-plus points, the
fourth hand would double for take-out. With a five card suit he would overcall as normal. In this instance east was con tent to let west play in one no
trump, as he did not have a five card suit. However, with his good hand, north re-bid two
hearts. Tight defence held this to seven tricks to provide east- west with the only plus score on the hand.

Friction in taxi led to assault
A MAN who hired a taxi to take him and his friends home from a pub, found that, by coinci dence, the driver was someone he had earlier accused of spreading rumours about his girl, friend. In the taxi there was
further friction and the driver stopped and radioed his firm to call the police. The two men got out and the driver was kicked and punched in the face. As a result , Antony
Duncan Shaw (30), of York S tre e t , Clitheroe, was given a th re e -m o n th p r i s o n s e n t e n c e , suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £25 costs, after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on John Warrilow. Mr Keith Bagot, for
Shaw, said that the taxi driver had allegedly “chat ted up” Shaw’s girl friend while taking her to work under c o n t r a c t . She rejected his attentions, but afterwards learned he was spreading stories around the town. Shaw was annoyed and
went to confron t the driver, leaving him in no doubt what would happen i f th e s t o r i e s w e re repeated. Mr Bagot said the taxi driver spoke to Shaw in an

Honouring memory of local geologist
LOCAL people are being urged to rally round and support a scheme to honour the memory of the late Clitheroe geologist and voluntary worker Mr Stanley Westhead. Clitheroe Civic Society a t tr a c t io n s

is planning to set up a Stanley Westhead Room at the Castle Museum to provide an everlasting reminder of his outstand ing contributions to the life of the town and the wealth of knowledge he le f t behind for future generations. Donations and offers of
help are now being sought, especially from those who benefited .from Mr West- head’s expertise.
The society, which has
still to work out the cost of the scheme, has enlisted the backing of Lancashire County Council’s museums department and the two groups will be working closely together to equip the room. The fund-raising begins
in earnest next Saturday with a bumper coffee, morning — with ex tra

Officer Mr Bob Jones is appealing to those who cannot attend the coffee m o r n in g to s e n d donations. Said Mr Jones: “I t is
still too early to say what kind of exhibits will go on display in the Stanley Westhead Room, but the emphasis will probably be on geology.”
A founder member of
the Society, Mr Westhead, who died last summer, aged 75, was a dedicated geologist throughout his life, commanding interna tional re sp e c t for his knowledge of fossils. Much of his private collection was accepted by the Brit ish Museum. He was also a leading amateur historian, magis
