WHALLEY’S title chal lenge came to an end at Great Harwood when they could only take one point from a close match. Harwood were put into bat
and, despite an early break through by Brian Brown, moved on to 66 for one. Tony Wright then dismissed Wilkin son for 32, but Adams made a solid 81 to boost his side’s total to 165 all out. Mark Fallon bowled very
well for Whalley his off-spin bringing him nis first five wicket haul for the club. Whalley made a splendid
start through Rick Darling and Paul Macintosh, who put on 72 before the pro. was caught for 41. It looked plain sailing for Whalley, but when Fallon was bowled* for 16 the innings col lapsed. Macintosh fell for 61 and,
despite some brave hitting by Brown. Whalley finished on 156 for 9. Great Harwood: P. Allen b

Chatbum Road on Saturday to see Clitheroe take on Bamold

century by Grant Jordan who hit 13*4 from 130 balls after Clitheroe had been put in to bat. Supported by Austin (41) and Neil Duckworth (36) he helped his side to a command

after 21 overs stood at 43. With Austin rejieatedl.v beating the bat, the visitors were content to play out time. Frustration grew as the match went on and nine Clitheroe bowlers were used in a vain attempt to prise six points from Bamoldswick. As it turned out, three points
were su f f ic ie n t to give Clitheroe the title and cap, what is probably, their most successful season. Jubiliant skinper Billy'Sling

that saw Clitheroe at their worst, the match sprang to life after the interval. Gary Butcher opened the
scoring in the 56th minute, fas tening on to John Taylor's through ball and beating the goalkeeper from 15 yards. A minute la te r the Taylor* Butcher combination worked again, this time Taylor’s left- wing cross being headed home at the far post by Butcher.
In the 62nd minute. Butcher
returned the favour, supplying a cross that left Taylor with the simplest of chances to head home. After three goals in six minutes, the 200-plus crowd were looking forward in antici pation to more goals as Clitheroe’s football shone as warmly as the September sun
shine. It was not to be as Clitheroe
relaxed and for the umpteenth time this season conceded late goals. Once again they showed their vulnerability at free-kicks as Dave Smith placed his shot wide of the wall and of Denis Underwood in the 73rd minute.
Nine minutes later a scram
ble in the Clitheroe goalmouth, caused mainly by a poor clear ance from Alan Byrum. came to an end with Andrew Ford stab
bing the ball home. Despite the late ji t te r s ,
Clitheroe held on to win two valuable points which keep them in touch with the league
leaders. Until that final 15 minutes,
the Clitheroe defence had looked firm. The midfield gave a much belter performance in the second half than in the first. John Bowman played reasonably well and Clive Dunn, as *a makeshift centre- forward, gave Netherfield plenty of problems.
Clitheroe’s men-of-the-match,
though, undoubtedly were Butcher and Taylor, with Graham Dewhurst not far behind. Sjwnsors F. A. Allen and Son Ltd gave the man-of- the-match award to John

Late goal for Transport
West Bradford Reserves 0, Transport 1
CHANCES were kept to a minimum in this Division Two match by uncompromising de
fences. Transport proved the more
jmsitive side in the first half but some last-ditch tackles kept
them at hay. West Bradford crept into the
match after the interval and a Case shot and Blenkinship header were excellently saved by Transport ’keejier Fisher. T ran sp o r t finished the

)2 Gareth wins in style on
French tour
GUINDLETON cyclist Gnreth Morris (19) has re turned home after a successful five months* racing in
France. The former Rowland School pupil had a glittering
season, taking part in races varying from criteriums __small circuit races around town centres — to 100 mile road races, including mountain climbs, such ns the Col d'Aubisque. seen recently in the Tour de
France. Gareth, who won several races and finished in the
first six in no less than 12 other events, is pictured with the many trophies he gained.
He was sponsored to ride for the club Oloron FC
and during his stay was based at Oloron Ste Marie, a small town in the Pyrenees.
Next year Gareth hopes to gain more experience by
visiting America, which is emerging as one of the leading cycling nations.
A WEAKENED Read side went down to defeat in this Ribble Valiev League Division
One game. The welcome return of Dean
Halliwell. who proved to be the best player on the field, could not inspire Read sufficiently, although the scoreline flattered
Kiinington. Training for the Read squad
is taking place at the Hyndbum Centre on Thursday evenings and will also commence at Gawthorpe School a week on
Monday. Homing
IN Clitheroe Homing Society’s last young bird race of the season, the homing pigeons were set off from Plymouth, on Sunday morning. Eighty birds conqieted and
the first home, some seven hours after liberation, belonged to S. Robinson and Sons (1,072
vards per minute). Second was \\. Chatbum (1.033). and third was A. Waring and Sons (1,030).

Mixed results in the Manx International
THERE were mixed results for Clitheroe and District Motor Club members competing in the Manx Interna
tional Rally. F o r Stonyhurst co
driver Ian Grindrod the event spelt heartbreak. He and his driver, Scot land’s Jim McRae, needed to win the event to cap-
. ture the British Open Rally Championship. But th eir Metro 6R4 de veloped engine difficulties and dumped them out of the rally after 21 tests. There was frustration
also for Well Terrace in surance broker John Meadows. He and Welsh driver Harr}* Hockly had already made sure of the British Open Champion ship 1300 class for Group A cars, winning the crown
in their works’ prepared Vauxhall Nova with a fine placing on last month’s Ulster Rally. On the three-day Manx
event they wanted desp erately to complete a suc cessful season with a top 10 result. This was not to be, however, as a series of mechanical “gremlins” beset the car, leaving them 15th overall and second in class. The brightest news for
the Clitheroe club came from member Cyril Bolton in his privately entered Presspart Metro 6R4. After an inspired drive
he finished in seventh place, his best ever result on the island. A further Clitheroe member, Ken Skidmore, finished 20th overall in a Talbot Sun beam 1600.
Scores from Clitheroe fairways
WINNER of Division One of the Singles Medal at Clitheroe Golf Club was John Hartley who carded a round of 81-12-69. G. McCally (83-12-71) came
second after a three-way play off with A. Taylor (81-10-71) and P. Shaw (76-5-71). Division Two was won by M
Fearnhead (79-13-66). Second was M. Dawson (82-14-68) fol lowing a play-off with A. Barlow (83-15-68). B. Mulligan (91-28-63) won
Division Three. Clitheroe golfer Clive Barlow scored a hole-in- one while on a winter league outing at Bingley St Ives,
Bradford.
