Contaminated land to be cleared

DERELICT gas board land in Clitheroe — heavily contaminated by chemicals — is to be cleaned up and prepared for housing purposes by Ribble Valley Council.

The £300,000 scheme

for the long-standing problem site off Kirkmoor Road, was unveiled at the council’s Policy and Re sources Cojnmittee on Monday.

The scheme, involving

the removal of a tar pit and dangerous chemicals from the soil, will qualify for massive government

CLITHEROE’S cup-win ning cricketers “took n bow” at a special recep tion in the Ribble Valley Mayor’s Parlour.

Players and officials

o f Clithe roe Cricket Club were invited to the function, held in recog nition of its winning the Thwaites Ribblesdale League’s Ramsbottom

Cup. Clitheroe defeated Rib

blesdale Wanderers in

the final at Chatburn Road.

The Mayor, Coun.

John Walmsley, con gratulated the club and said it was appropriate that the final should have been contested by the town’s two clubs in Clitheroe 800 year.

aid. Coun. John Cowgill

(Clitheroe) said: “1 am pleased that at long last we have received govern ment support to clear up this site and the scheme can now be viewed as a matter of urgency. Every one who has walked round the site will know just how dangerous and ugly it

is.” Coun. Eric Bracewell

(Clitheroe) welcomed the scheme as "sensible and reasonable,” but hit out at the gas board for leaving the land in a dangerous

state. Chief Executive, Mr

Michael Jackson, said that when the gas board moved off the site some years ago the dangers of tar and sulphates were probably not fully appreci ated.

Councillors opted for a

scheme best suited to the type of housing not re quiring individual gardens — housing association u n its and sh e l te r ed housing. They approved recom

m en d a t ion s by the Borough Planning and Technical Officer, Mr Philip Bailey, that a depth of one metre be cleared of dangerus chemicals and that the council should negotiate with the gas board to buy the land. Mr Bailey pointed out

that the Department of the Environment appreci ated the problem and had accepted, in principle, the one-metre scheme. It was hoped that all

remedial works would re ceive 100% grand aid, and the Department of the Environment had already sanctioned urgent work on removal of the tar well and the fencing off of the site. Mr Bailey said that the

gasometer was not part of the £300,000 scheme al though its removal would be desirable if housing de velopment went ahead. He stressed that rede

velopment of the site was a long-term programme.
