Big showdown ends in draw

Earby 145 for 5, Clitheroe 187 for 8 THE big showdown between the Ribblesdale Senior League’s two leading clubs

fizzled out into a disappointing draw on Saturday. Earby put Clitheroe into bat

and, after being set a target of 187, puzzled some observers by failing to make a bolder at tempt to win the match.

Only when they had crawled

to 73* for 3 from 30 overs did they begin to push the score

along, with Stephen Gee and John Gibb together. Their late effort came to an

end in the 43rd over when lan Austin bowled Gee for 61. Gibb was bowled by Jordan in the following over for 48 and Earby finished 42 runs adrift of the Clitheroe total. The Clitheroe innings had

until being adjudged lbw when on 35. In the 34tn over Jordan hit Stead for three successive 6s but was caught on the boundary attempting a fourth,

having scored 68. Neil Duckworth scored

Among the desperate-mea

sure acquisitions was 46-year- old Tom Tatham, who justified his inclusion by setting up Clitheroe’s equaliser. First-half chances for Neil

Baron, David Murray and Phil Dewhurst could have seen Clitheroe comfortably in the lead, although Andy Holden at the other end had to be more alert than in previous games. Clitheroe stooped ui> the
