Mullen magic could send Clitheroe top

MULLEN is back — Clitheroe’s exciting winger and team captain Steve Mullen returns to the side on Saturday after a 28-day suspension.

And the stage could not be

better set for his comeback. I f Clitheroe take two points from their match with Burscough, th e y go top o f the Bass NWCFL Division One for the first time this season. Current leaders Kirkby are

involved in an FA Vase replay, while joint second placed club Accrington Stanley play an FA

Trophy match. But, even with the inspira

tional Mullen back in the Clitheroe team, Burscough will

be no pushover. They are presently in mid

and 0-0 at Burscough. Officials hope the match will

bring out the supporters. “We have slipped these past

few weeks in the spectator stakes," said chairman Cyril Whiteside. "Both Colne Dy namos and Accrington Stanley, our neighbour clubs, are at tracting bigger gates, although their results are no better and their performances certainly no

more exciting than ours. "We are the division’s top

scorers and Dave O’Neill and his team deserve to be the top- supported club in the area.”

TWO goals from Kirkby's Mick Fagan,

Fagan gave Kirkby the lead

after .*15 minutes with a sweet ly-struck left-foot shot from 12 yards and Clitheroe had to withstand some heavy pressure before the interval brought

Clitheroe take the initiative and, driven on by the midfield of Butcher, Dunn and John Bowman, they gave the home defence a testing time. The

reward arrived in the 77th minute. A Taylor corner was only partially cleared and Dunn volleyed home from eight

yards. There was no sitting back

from Clitheroe. They kept coming forward as the final stages reached fever pitch.

They nearly snatched victory

when Horsefield's volley thun dered against the foot of the Kirkby post, but the match re mained alt-square.
