driving
A MAN who did not stop after crashing his car into a parked vehicle in Henthorn Road, Clitheroe, was fined £160 by the town’s magistrates for failing a breath test and was disqualified from driving for 15 months. Breath tests showed
that Steven Ernest Man sell (24), of Hodder Grove, Clitheroe, had 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35 microg
rams. The court was told that
Mansell was traced by police from a witness’s de scription of the car. For driving without due
care, Mansell was fined £40, with a further £50 for failing to stop after an accident and £20 for not reporting the accident. Mr Stephen Barker, de fending, said Mansell had been for a lunchtime drink at the Station Hotel, fol lowed by a few drinks of spirits at a friend’s house. He did not realise how much he had had to drink, but accepted his punish ment. It was a “one-off’ inci dent, added Mr Barker.
Salon wins
approval A MOBILE hairdresser’s proposal to change the use of a house in Primrose Terrace, Langho, to a salon with living accom modation, has been ap proved by Ribble Valley Council planners, subject to the decision of the
County Surveyor. The Development Con
trol Sub-committee was recommended to refuse the plan submitted by Mr D. T. E. Coughlin. Nearby r e s id en t s
claimed that the shop would increase “already apparent” parking prob lems and would be con trary to good planning practice because the pre mises were in the middle of a block of eight garden- fronted houses in Whalley New Road. But Coun. Bill Fleming

FINED £50
A LANGHO woman whose cheque for an excise licence was not honoured was fined £50 at Clitheroe for failing to de liver up the licence to the Secretary of State. Anne Nanette Bamber,
of York Lane, was or dered to pay £15 costs. The court was told that
(Billington) said that there was ample parking space in the area and that most shops in Langho were in the centre of ter-
when the £49.50 cheque for the licence was not honoured, notice was served requiring her to return the licence, but she did not comply.
A HIGHLIGHT at the Clitheroe Labour Party’s annual meeting was a pre sentation of a badge to president Mr George Braithwaite (seated front right) for his long and loyal service to the group. ‘Mr Braithwaite, of
E shton T e r r a c e , Clitheroe, who has been seriously ill, has for many years put in hard work to keep the branch going. He has also taken care of the Labour Rooms, in cluding opening up, light ing fires and other duties to keep the place running. After the meeting there
was a social, including a pie and peas supper. Now the rooms have
been decorated and a kitchen provided, it is hoped to hold more social events in the future.
Stole road lamp
WHEN the head of Clitheroe police saw a man waiting in his car by some portable lamps at roadworks at Portfield Bar, his suspicions were aroused, Clitheroe magis
trates were told. Chief Insp. Malcolm
Rawcliffe reported what he had seen to officers on duty in the area. Shortly afterwards, they stopped the man in Read and found a lamp hidden be neath the passenger seat. For taking the lamp,
Tony Andrew (26), of Wood house Avenue, Keighley, was fined £50
with £25 costs. He told the Bench that
he was on his way home from an outing to Black pool and thought “one would be handy as a safety lamp.”
£100 fine
for assault at pub
A 20-YEAR-OLD nursing assistant at Calderstones was fined £100 at Preston Crown Court for assault causing actual bodily harm to a Clitheroe man
Morgan, QC, also ordered Joseph Longton, of The Crescent, Whalley, to pay £100 compensation to the victim, Mr David Hartley (21), of Pimlico Road, Clitheroe. The Recorder said he accepted that Longton had a very good work record and impres sive testimonials, but warned him he would re ceive a custodial sentence if there was any repeti tion. Mr Tim White, pro

secuting, said there had been a history of ill-feel ing which erupted one September evening when, after an exchange • of stares in the pub, Long ton struck Mr Hartley in the face as he was leaving. This cause him to lose
his balance and he was punched several times while on the ground. Mi- Hartley was treated at Blackburn Royal Infir mary for a broken nose and other facial injuries. When seen by police,
Longton admitted respon sibility but said Mr Hart ley had struck him first. In mitigation, Miss Bar

RIBBLE VALLEY councillors are to oppose any attempt to move the Careers Service away from Clitheroe.
Members of the 'Policy
and Resources Commit tee, meeting on Monday night, voiced their objec tions to a report from the County Council’s Further Education Sub-committee on the reorganisation of the careers service in the Ribble Valley. Chief Executive Mr
Michael Jackson said that it would be a retrograde step to take a further amount of the administra tion away from the area. Coun. Eric Bracewell
(Clitheroe) expressed the view of several councillors when he stated that the town should have its own careers office and staff. The report suggests the
transfer of Longridge and Chipping to the Preston district and the remainder of the Ribble Valley — excluding areas which are already part of the Black burn district office — to Hyndburn. Once the remainder of
the Ribble Valley Careers Service was amalgamated, forming the Hyndburn- Ribble Valley Careers Service, the present staff would transfer to the new district. The report proposed
maintaining a full-time branch office in Clitheroe. Coun. B e r t Jones
(Clitheroe) said it would be in the best interests of residents to have staff in the town who knew the
