THIS was a much-im proved performance from a revitalised Clitheroe side determined to end their recent slump in form. But again, a string of defen

sive errors cost them the match.

Clitheroe conceded their cus

tomary early try with the match only minutes old, but to their credit came back with some telling forward surges.

Following a lineout at half

way, Ian Fielding fed stand-off Gordon Laidlaw, who dummied the fullback to race 40 yards to the line for an excellent try.

tion kicked well to keep Clitheroe on their heels and capitalised on some poor clear ances and untidy tackling to regain the lead. Ivan Duxbury made some

useful charges and flanker Roger Holmes was again in the thick of everything, but their efforts were negated by ineffec tive blocking at the lineout, which left scrum half Malcolm Heanan at the mercy of the Ambleside back-row. The home backs rallied to

ease some of the pressure and put together some promising

moves, but two late tries by the Ambleside wing put paid to any hopes of a revival. Clitheroe's renewed commit

ment augurs well for the future, which looks a lot brigh ter than it did a few weeks

ago. C lithe ro e : D. Fielding,

to raise a team and had to cancel their match against Ambleside, but with several players available after injury and because of the university

holidays, Saturday’s home match against Aspull IVths is likely to go ahead.

Hat-trick Geoff on losing side

RO Victoria 5, Chatbum 3

CHATBURN could not hold rampant RO Vic toria in this Ribble Valley League Division One fixture despite a hat-trick from Geoff Young. RO Victoria were 2-0

up at half-time, thanks to efforts from Ian Threlfall and Gary Conti. However, Young, playing for

Chatburn because his usual team, Clitheroe Reserves, did not nave a game, levelled the scores with two goals in a 10- minute spell. In the 60th minute Conti

scored his second to put the home team back in front, Stuart Thomson made it 4-2 shortly afterwards and Threl fall scored his second to com

plete RO Victoria’s tally. Young added his and Chat- burn’s third in the closing

minutes. RO Victoria: Tomlinson,

front left, threw a maximum 180 and his opponent In the final, Ian Lever (Brownhill Arms), seen next to him, checked out in one game in Just 13 arrows. The tournament originally attracted 67 hopefuls with the quarter-finals, semis and final being played

on the last night. Losing semi-finalists were Jan Blsping and local

ace Andy Gudgeon (Black Horse) who spurned a great opportunity to go through to the final. In the final Drachenberg won by two legs to one

with a display of accuracy.

Rovers stars in quiz

BLACKBURN Rovers’ players Noel Brotherston, Ian Miller, Derek Fazackerley, John Lowey and former favourite Norman Bell will be in action at Shawbridge, on Sunday . . . but not on the football field. They will be taxing their

brains instead of their feet in a sports quiz against some equal ly famous footballers — well, famous locally that is — in the form of past non-league win gers, “The Wingers’ Grave yard” who include former wizards Roy Bishop and Kenny

Ward. The quiz is a light-hearted

warm up to the final of the Waddington Sports Quiz at Clitheroe FC Clubhouse, begin ning at 8 p.m. A Blackburn Rovers' auto-

graphed football will be raffled proceeds going to the

__ nan Bell Testimonial Fund. A supper will be served. Ad

mission is free, courtesy of Clitheroe FC.

The final of the quiz proper . ..

between Optimist and Bowker Bros starts at about 9-30. The results in Sunday’s semi

finals were; Cox and Co 43, Optimists 72; Bowker Bros 5C Whalley Celtic 43.

Swimmers do well

CLITHEROE swimmers were well involved in the action, on Saturday, at the North Lanca shire Age Group competition at Blackpool's Derby Baths. The best result was gained by S. J. Ellis winner of the 11

years boys’ 100m breast stroke. Second place was taken by

P. Jones in the 15 years boys' 100m breaststroke and also in the 400m individual medley. He finished fourth in the 100m but terfly final. In the 12 years boys’ indi

vidual medley, R. Simpson was seventh. The girls had a busy time,

too, with J. Robinson coming third in the 14 years girl? 100m backstroke, 400m freesty le and 100m breaststroke con tests. Colleague J. Waterworth was

fifth in the 14 years girls' back- stroke and seventh in both the 400m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. In the girls’ 11 years age

group, Clitneroe was well rep resented by T. A. Gee who finished third in both the 100m freestyle and in the 200m indi vidual medley. In the 13 years girls’ section,

L. T. Ellis took fifth place in the 200m breaststroke and ‘ third in the 200m individual medley.

Nathan shines twice

Paak United 0, Henthom United 7

NATHAN Peel, playing prob ably his best game in a Henth om shirt, scored four goals to steer the under-14 side to a comfortable win in the Hynd bum and District Boys League. Henthorn led 4-0 at half- time, despite losing midfield

powerhouse Michael Frankland, and continued their domination after the break. The other scorers were Gary

Ward (2) and Shane Dewhurst. Foxhill Cubs 3,

Henthom United 9

HENTHORN Under-13s strug gled through to the semi-finals of the Gilbraith Cup with a hard-fought victory. The game was not as one

sided as the score suggests, with Foxhill holding Henthom 4-3 at half-time. However, they collapsed

after the interval and Hentnom took full advantage. Man-of- the-match Nathan Peel hit a hat-trick and Henthom’s other goals came from Antony /Smith, Andrew Henderson and Lee Robinson.

Great Harwood Rovers 5, Henthom United 1

HENTHORN Under-15s, field ing only 10 men, put up a spirited display against the league leaders. They were in with a shout

when Darren Connell’s cross shot caught Rovers 'keeper out of position to make the score 2- 1. But Rovers added three more as Henthom tired. The side has a busy week

ahead, playing away at . Church Athletic, on Saturday, and competing in the Cambridge Press Cup semi-final on Monday against opponents not yet known.

WEST Bradford defender Dave Reddin put his side in front with a shot following a deep ran and Grindleton's Tony Pritt equalised with a dipping effort from a free kick on the edge of the W. Bradford penalty area. In the second naif W. Brad

ford regained the lead through another defender, Mick Wilson, who bundled in the ball from a comer. The pitch, by this time, was

cutting up and became muddy in the middle, making ball con trol difficult. But W. Bradford kept on pushing forward and went further ahead thanks to a John Clegg penalty. However, Pritt reduced the arrears with another penalty after a foul by Pearson. With the score now at 3-2

W. Bradford pressed forwarc, aided by fine work from substi

tute David Johnson. The effort resulted in a great

goal from the head of Ken Mantle after a Kevin McAUy across. Simon Reynolds had promising game at right back for W. Bradford. West Bradford: Barber

Reynolds, Reddin, Wilson Blenkinship, Clegg, Potter, Pearson, McAlly, Mantle Pinder. Sub: Johnson.

dropped a point :k marking in this

One encounter. Rimington made a very slow

start on a heavy pitch, but after 20 minutes took the lead thanks to Gary Scott. Smalley made it 2-0 just before half time after Rimington had gone dose on a number of occasions. However, after half-time

Rimington started to falter and conceded a goal. John Hodgson then missed a penalty for Rimington, but Scott made it 3- 1 shortly afterwards. Ribchester never gave up

fighting and made it 3-2 with a penalty after John Hartley

handled in the area. Right on full-time slack

AFTER a cautious start and some good football on a soggy pitch, Waggon started to domi nate affairs. Simon Whiteside scored the first two goals and had another disallowed before the Kings came back with a Brunker effort. The second half was one-way

traffic. Whiteside capped an outstanding performance with a third goal and Andrew Black- bum, playing his best soccer for weeks, added the other two. Even goalkeeper I. Nuttall
