Ribblesdale Wanderers 79, Whalley 79

WHALLEY were left dumbstruck and Wanderers jumping for joy after an amazing afternoon’s cricket at Church Meadow, on Saturday.

Chasing the home side’s

79 all out, Whalley had reached 75 for 6 and vic tory seemed assured. However, Wanderers did

not give in easily. Ian Johnson took a brilliant,

catch at deep square leg to dismiss Nick Keighley o f f David Mason. Two balls later Bob Birch caught Ian Marshall and, in the next over, Malcolm Dennett held a return catch to dismiss Stewart Procter.

Whalley had gone to 75 fpr 9

and with last pair Tony Wright and Vic Moms at the wicket a victory for either side was possible. As it turned out neither picked up the six

FOR the second succes sive match, Clitheroe’s last-wicket pair desper ately held out for a losing draw after the earlier batsmen had failed to cope with a strong bowl ing attack. Last week, the Chatburn

points. Wright hit tw’o 2s off Mason

to level the scores, but was then caught by Stephen Kerr at slip on the last bowl of the over.

Wanderers were left celeb

rating their terrific recovery and ■galley to rue the missed chance of picking up six points and narrowing the gap at the

top of the league. Although only 158 runs were

scored, the spectators could not complain about the lack of ex

citement. A wet wicket meant the bow

lers were always going to be on top and after winning the toss, Paul Macintosh not surprisingly asked Wanderers to bat.

done well to dismiss Settle for 137 after a big score had

seemed likely. Put into bat. Settle lost an

early wicket when David

Norman had Andrews caught behind. The score moved to 47 when Norman took his second

wicket, but then Australians Stonehouse and Lindsay shared

a good stand. Norman broke the partner

their side into a winning posi

tion, but the picture soon changed w’hen Clitheroe lost three early wickets. Te r ry O’Connor, David

Hardcastle and David Norman all w'ent with the score at 23.

Neil Duckw’orth, who had been joined by Seed, fell at 42 and then Neil Ashworth was out for duck, becoming Settle pro Sam ple’s fifth victim. Seed was the only player

finish at 150 for 6. The Barnoldswick openers

were tied down by Bushell and Kawalec until both were run out in bizarre fashion. Graves

played the ball to gulley and started but Richard

Dennett is top scorer

RIBBLESDALE Wanderers’ Malcolm Dennett was once again in fine form for the Rib blesdale League representative side on Sunday, although his team was knocked out of the League Cricket Conference President’s 'Trophy. Playing against a strong

Manchester District As^niciation side, Dennett was top scorer with 60. Craig Austin (37) and

Paul Macintosh (10), of Whal ley, David Norman (15), of Clitheroe, and Ian Johnson (8), of Wanderers, helped take the score to 177 for 7 from 48

overs. The Manchester side passed .

this with five overs left to record a five-wicket victory. In

a fiery spell, Norman took 2 for 32. Johnson bowled tightly,

LEAGUE leaders Clitheroe w'ere unable to overcome Feniscowles’ stone-w'all defence on Sunday and had to settle for a winning draw'. On a tricky wicket, Clitheroe

found scoring difficult against a steady Feniscow'les attack. John Myler (21). Keith Driver (37) and Granville Bennett (28) formed the backbone of the in nings, but after the allotted 45 overs the home side had only managed 135 for 7. Jonathan Scorah 3 for 22 and
