A BRILLIANT unbeaten part nership of 111 by Stephen Farnsworth and Ian Threlfall at Bamoldswick on Sunday gave Wanderers their first vic tory of the season. The pair came together with
the score at 40 for 1 and took the bowling apart. Farnsworth’s 63 and Threl-
fall’s 64 both contained seven 4's and three 6's and enabled Wanderers to reach their target in the 22nd over. David O’Neill was the most
successful bowler in the Bar- noldswick innings, taking 4 for

AN unbeaten half-century by F ra n k M a cw o od and a marathon bowling spell by Neil Weaver helped Whalley to a comprehensive vic tory at Church Meadow on Saturday. Batting first Wanderers were
never going well against an attack spearheaded by Weaver. He opened the bowling and was still going strong when the in nings closed 45 overs later. Bob Driver top-scored with
27 but could do little as part ners departed at the other end. Wanderers staggered to 41 for 6 before Tom Wallbank and Alec Holgate put on 30 runs. Wanderers’ total looked as if
it might be enough when Whal- ley Tost two early wickets. However, Derek Higginbotham and Macwood steadied things and took their side to the brink of victory. Wanderers: K. Proctor, 4,

Wickets win in the tied end
Ribblesdale Wanderers 1st 165 for 8,
Old Rossendalians 165 for 6
WANDERERS were knocked out of the Ramsbottom Cup after a middle-order batting collapse allowed their oppo nents to tie the scores after a full 48 overs . . . with fewer
wickets lost. Wanderers lost the toss and
were asked to bat first. After a cautious start, openers Dave Cottam and J. Ainsworth started to score freely. Ains worth was the first to go after hitting 18 runs. Malcolm Dennett was the
next batsman and he pushed the score along with a well hit 26. At this stage Wanderers had taken the score to 101, just, the springboard needed to launch an attack for a big score. This was not to be, however,
for Cottam (60) was sent back to the pavilion very soon after Dennett had been dismissed. After that dismissal, the
middle order collapsed and it was left to Stephen Kerr and Murray Walker to score a few quick runs at the end of the innings. At one stage Wanderers
were scoring at five .an over, but finished at a rate of three per over. The Wanderers bowlers
bowled tightly in. the opening overs ana contained the bats men up to the closing overs when the unfortunate Leach was particularly punished. The pick of the other bowlers
must nave been Paul Seedle and Bob Birch. Both bowled economically and picked up wic kets. Professional Dave Mason claimed the other wicket. Although Wanderers bowled well, their total of 165 was just
not enough. Ribblesdale Wanderers: D.

too long for their first wicket, when Nigel Pickles was caught behind by Vic Morris off the bowling of Tony Wright. After 14 overs the Whalley

professional Sivardmakrishnan was introduced into the attack and in his first over claimed the wicket of Mike Wiseman off a fine catch by Craig Austin (37 for 2). The Earby skipper Dave
Little was next to go bowled by Barry Foster, and Mike Chappie became Morris's second victim behind the wick ets, this time off Siva. The turning point in the
match came when Austin was intoduced and in his first over took two wickets. His first victim was Stephen
Gee, who had batted very well for 36. Stephen tried to hook for six only to be caught by the finest catch seen at Station Road for some years. Kevin Rogerson launched himself into the air and magnificently caught {he ball. At 109 for 8 there was a
revival by Earby with Ronnie Wiseman and Tom Forster taking the score to 139 for 8 when the innings closed. The Whalley innings, again
opened by Mark Fallon and Paul Macintosh, turned out to be a formality with fantastic Fallon scoring 70 and magnifi cently -Macintosh 64 not out taking their side to within the
sight of victory. However. Fallon was caught
and bowled by Gee with the score at 120 leaving Macintosh to see his side home, retiring undefeated at the end of a great 64. None of the Earby bowlers
had much success, with Gee taking the only wicket. It was a good display by
Whalley who in the past have had some hard contests against Earby. But on the day, Whal ley bowled, batted ana fielded better than their opponents and thoroughly deserved their fine victory with 10 overs to spare. Earby: Gee c Rogerson b

CHATBURN failed to score enough runs at Burnley on Sunday in this North East Lan cashire League match. Asked to Dat first, Chatburn

Rally success
CLITHEROE insurance agent John Meadows and Tony. Sad- dington won the Astra Chal lenge section of the South-West Stages Rally. John and Tony, in a Mk. II Astra 1300 also finished second
overall. The pair took 14 fastest
times out of 18 stages, some of them during the night. Also among the points was
Slaidburn’s John Thompson, partnered by Alan Ridehalgh. John, a plant-hire contractor, of Dunnow Lodge, finished fifth in the challenge and eighth overall in the rally proper.
Whalley did not have to wait
sional Laxman Sivaramak rishnan bowled quite mag nificently and finished with figures of 6 for 33. In his last six overs he took four wickets fo r no runs. David Cottam won the toss
and asked Whalley to bat and Mark Fallon and Whalley skip per Paul Macintosh opened tne innings. The Ribblesdale attack fea
tured some fine bowling from Bob Birch and he got his just reward when Styles took a good catch to dismiss Fallon with the score at 25. Nick Keighley was next to go
for five with the score at 47, again Birch taking the wicket. Birch at this stage had the fine figures of 2 for 18 off 14 overs. Siva joined Macintosh and
pushed the score up to 73 before he was caught by Mal colm Dennett off the bowling of David Mason. It then became a struggle for
the Whalley batsmen and wick ets fell fast to accurate bowling by Mason who finished with 4 for 45 while Ian Johnson had 2 for 19. The Whalley innings closed at 116 for 9. Wanderers began their in
nings with Cottam and Jack Ainsworth showing great re spect for Siva, but the Whalley pro tempted Ainsworth down the wicket and he was stumped by Vic Morris — 13 for 1. Malcolm Dennett joined
Cottam at the wicket and they pushed the score to 47 before Cottam was bowled round his legs by Siva. Dennett went next caught by Siva off the bowling oft Barry Foster — 59 for 3. What followed next Wander-'
ers will want to forget. The remaining batsmen were bowled out for 67, due to some fine bowling by Siva ably as sisted by Tony Wright 0 for 18,
and Foster 2 for 9. An unusual dismissal in the
Wanderers’ innings was that of wicket-keeper Murray Walker. On going forward to a ball by
Siva and not getting his bat to it, the ball spun back to the wickets off his pads and for
, some reason Walker handled the ball and stopped it hitting his wicket. He was given out for hand ball. It was a good win for Whal
ley who had not batted well, but credit must go to Wander ers for some fine bowling, par ticularly by Birch who finished with 2 for 19. There was also a good display by Walker behind the wickets which earned him
the fielding point. Whalley: M. Fallon c Styles

fall at first hurdle
Blackburn Northern 128 for 9, Clitheroe 112
CLITHEROE’S disappointing start to the season continued on Sunday when they fell at the first hurdle of the Rams bottom Cup at Blackburn Northern. The home side were re
stricted to 128 for 9 from their 48 overs, but Clitheroe’s bat ting could not amass even this modest total. Sound bowling from David
Norman, Tim Blezard, Bill Slinger, Garth Sutcliffe and Rod Booth kept Northern’s batsmen well in check. Clitheroe’s reply on what, in
recent years, nas become a poor batting track only looked on course when David Norman was at the crease. After his dismissal Neil Duckworth staged a valiant rearguard action, but wickets were falling too quickly. They finished 16 runs short with 24 deliveries still to be

BATSMEN were on top at Lower Darwen on Sunday when Wanderers bowed out of the Lawrenson Cup in the first
round. They looked to have set a
good total, but their bowlers could make few inroads into the Lower Darwen batting and the winning runs came in the penultimate (47th) over. Ken Proctor and Bob Driver
gave their side a great start, putting on 87 for the first wicket. Alan Parker continued the good work and the score moved on to 140 before Driver was run out for 63. Parker went on to make 50

Myler 50 picks up points Fcniscowles 120,
Clitheroe 3rds 122 for 3.
CLITHEROE picked up six points at Feniscowles on Sunday with an unbeaten half century by John Myler seeing them to victoiy. A devastating opening spell
by Jim Furnell and Robin Snarp reduced Feniscowles to 14 for 4, but a middle order stand and a rough outfield re scued them. Geoff Cartledge broke the
back of the Feniscowles team and finished with 4 for 32. Clitheroe started their rep
very slowly with sheet-anchor I Myler taking 40 balls to get off the mark; Steve Rush pushed the score
along and the run rate in creased dramatically when
'McRae was promoted to number three. A quick 27, in
cluding two huge sixes, put Clitheroe back in the driving seat. A determined knock of 18‘by
Keith Driver saw his side to victory. Myler finished on 50
after spending an untroubled j two hours at the crease. Feniscowles: 120. Bowling: J. Furnell 18-7-43-4; R. Sharp 13-3-35-2; G. Cart- ledge 11.2-2-32-4.

Norman pace sets puzzle
Settle 177 for 9 dec., Clitheroe 146
CHAMPIONS Settle took maximum points at Chatburn' Road on Saturday, but Clitheroe’s performance was much improved, the outcome of the game being in doubt until near the end. Clitheroe pro David Norman
was soon in action after Settle were asked to bat. He proved too fast for Andrews and a low bounce accounted for Davidson. However, Scothern and
Sample both shared useful partnerships with Lindsay which produced the bulk of Settle’s runs. • Lindsay’s innings of 79 was
highly accomplished. He strug gled against the pace of
Norman, but more than com pensated at the other end — using his feet to devastating effect against Garth Sutcliffe. Once he was out, the push
for quick runs together with Norman’s bowling made short work of the other batsmen.
