Belles beat

local girls Clitheroe Ladies 3, Ingol Belles 5

CLITHEROE were brought back down to earth in the North West Division Two fol lowing their 11-1 thrashing of Southport Ladies. Ingol Belles, who seem cer

tain to win the championship, went behind to an Anne Morris

foal. They equalised, but

a ck ie P a rk e r r e s to r e d Clitheroe’s lead before half

time. Ingol drew level shortly after

the break through a disputed penalty, and then added three more to wrap up the game. A consolation goal came from

Morris, who was on target in her side’ s previous game against Southport. She scored four times in that

game and her partner Kathryn Wyld hit a hat-trick. The two girls have now scored eight hat-tricks between them this season. Clitheroe’s other scorers in

the comprehensive victory were Pauline Feather, Jackie Parker, Janice Syme and an

own goal. Clitheroe’s team for both

matches was: Jackson, Barton, Monk, Counsell, O’Connor, R o g e r s , Wyld , F ea th e r, Moms, Syme, Parker. Subs: Ashworth, Bibby. The club’s AGM will be at

the Walmsley Arms, Great Harwood, on May 23rd.

Boncers beat Bin Men

THERE was a nail-biting finish to the final of the Rimington FC Sports Quiz, with the result hanging on the last question. Eventually, the Bowland

Boncers team, from Bolton-by- Bowland (comprising Colin Darlington, Roger Park and John Murray) beat Rimington's Bin Men (David Binns, Stuart Buttenvorth and Tim Ashton)

49-48. Question masters, who tested

the teams’ knowledge of a wide range of sports, were Philip Hodgson and Gary Scott. The winners and runners-up received trophies for their

efforts. The quiz, in the Black Bull

Hotel, Rimington, which at tracted nine teams and was held over five weeks, raised about £40 for the club. It is hoped the quiz will become an annual event.

Ribble Valley promotion

issue settled

WAGGON and Horses clinched promotion to Division One of the Ribble Valley Football League alongside champions White Horse after thrashing Sjiringmill Reserves 6-0 on Monday night. Division One championship-

hopefuls Sabden also kept title chances alive with a G-0 win over Grindleton. If Sabden beat Rimington to

morrow night then they should clinch the championship. Also playing tomorrow night

in Division One are: RO Vic toria v West Bradford. Satur day: Daisyfield v Transport. Monday: RO Victoria v Sabden; Read v Transport; Rochester v Rimington; Daisyfield v Chat-

burn. Results, Wednesday: Divi

sion One — Sabden 5, Grindle ton 0: Chatburn 3, Rimington 2. Division Two — West Brad ford Res 1, Lord Nelson 2. Saturday: Division One —

Grindleton 8, Calderstones 0; Transport 2, Chatburn 3. Divi sion Two — Springmill Res 1, West Bradford Res 6; Sabden Res 1, Waggon and Horses 2.

Exciting tie

Rolls-Royce 1st 165, Clitheroe 2nds 165.

AN under-strength Clitheroe side were involved in an excit ing tie at Rolls-Royce on

Saturday. The home side made a good

start and had reached 50 in the 10th over. However, some tight bowling and fine fielding restricted them to 165. Clitheroe only used three

bowlers, the most successful of whom was Phil Bishop with 5

for 61. Clitheroe were always going

Opening sets

CLITHEROE Tennis Club’s East Lancashire League season got off to a bright and breezy start on Sunday when they gained a creditable draw in their second division game at Queen's, Blackburn. The team of Chris Geldard,

Michael Dixon, Louise Case and Melanie Chew played ex ceptionally well considering the windy conditions and their lack of league experience. The league is based on sing

les competition, with no stipu lation as to the sex of players. Clitheroe faced an all-boys

team on Sunday and so special credit goes to the girls for win

ning vital rubbers. S co re: Clitheroe 4 (62

games), Queen’s 4 (53 games). On Sunday the team plays host to Reedley B.

close on several occasions. John Taylor saw a shot hit a defen der on the line and Proos, Eatough and Mullen all went

close. Droylsden keeper Tanner

pulled off a string of saves. With the large Clitheroe fol

lowing fearful of a break away Drovlsden equaliser — which would have meant any chance of the championship gone — and Clitheroe needing another point for promotion, the tension mounted. All fears were put to rest by

Butcher in a last pulsating six minutes and it became “slaugh ter in the sun” for Droylsden. Butcher struck like a cobra

in the 84th minute to drill home a loose ball from six yards, then completed his hat- trick a minute from time with another piece of opportunism. So a long hard season draws
