Full marks for young speakers l

A PUBLIC speaking con test organised by the Rotary Club of Clitheroe proved something of a triumph for Clitheroe Girls’ Grammar School. For the school won the

Mixed reception for bus passes

THE half-fare bus pass scheme being offered by the Ribble Valley Council came in for both iraise and criticism at a meeting of the iorough’s Parish Councils’ Liaison Committee. Coun. Charles Wark- favour of it. Also, it ought

man (Mellor) thought the scheme had been general ly welcomed by those who understood it. But Coun. Jack Carr (Billington) said the true cost to the pen sioner was far more than the £5 charge made for the pass. He pointed out there was also the cost of the photograph needed for the pass as well as the cost of travelling to have the picture taken.

Coun. Bill Fleming (Bil

lington) said that it was not possible to have a scheme to please every one. However, he was quite sure that, after a year, people would realise that if they are going to travel, the scheme would be of great benefit.

By and large, the vast

majority of people who had spoken to him were in

to generate some travel on buses. Chief Executive Mr

Michael Jackson reminded members that a photo grapher would be at the council offices in Church Walk between 10 a.m. and noon this week to enable pensioners to have their picture taken for the pass. Also P y e ’s p h o to

graphers in York Street would be open normal shop hours to take pic tures. The set charge was £1. He added that the scheme was open to women of 60 and over and

men 65 and over. Post Offices in the

Ribble Valley are now is suing the passes and will do so up to April 13th. After that date applic

ants must go to the coun cil offices.
