Street, Clitheroe, was fined £75 for theft of groceries worth £17 and a further £75 for the false accounting of goods worth £71. She was ordered to pay £8S compensation and £30 costs. Her grandmother, Mar

garet Winifred Jones (00), o f Beech S t r e e t , Clitheroe, was fined £75 with £30 costs for stealing goods worth £22. She was ordered to pay £1S com

pensation. Another employee, Pat

ricia Lesley Greenwood,

of Kirk Avenue, Low Moor, was granted a con ditional discharge for theft of groceries valued at £2.40, but was ordered to pay £30 costs. Mr David Hartley, pro

secuting, said the man ager became suspicious when he followed Jones round the store. He noted everything

she put in her shopping trolley and when the total came up on the till it was considerably less than the true amount. The manager challenged

Lynch, who admitted theft and fiddling the cost of goods. Police then saw the other women, who im mediately admitted their deception. Mr Gregory Earnshaw,

defending Lynch, Ridge way and Jones, said they had all learned their lesson. Both Lynch and R i d g e w a y had been sacked. Mr Stephen Barker, for

Greenwood, said that when she realised she had been undercharged, she wanted to tell the man agement, but did not want to let down her col

leagues.

; r _ U A TjE— t- THE LOCAL FAMILY FIRM ESTABLISHED FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS

PUPILS o f Brennands Endowed School, Slaid- burn, took a step back into history when they visited Turton Towers, near Darwen. The 35 children and 10

members of staff dressed in appropriate costume were given an insight into the life in Tudor times. Spinning, weaving,

and butter, cheese and candle-making were on the busy schedule, along with archery and may pole dancing. There was also time to enjoy a ban quet, prepared bv some of the children in the kitchens — and eaten with the fingers, o f course! Robert Barber and

Joanne Slinger played the part of the lord and lady whose job was not to perform any of the menial tasks, but to keep a watchful eye on their workers. Our picture shows

staff and pupils about to start the banquet.
