TWO Clitheroe canoeists have been selected for the Great Britain Wild Water Racing youth squad. Andrew Tomlinson (16),

I WOULD like to put into perspective a statement made at the. playing fields meeting at Whalley, saying

be a selection from squad members of a team to go to Germany the following month.

Andrew, who is study

in g fo r A - le v e ls in mathematics, physics and chemistry at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, has already represented Britain in the youth team, having been in the under- 16s in 1982. This time he is hoping

to make the under-18s team.

mainly by our own fund raising efforts of £11,731 during the period from 1978 to 1983; grants from the Ribble Valley Council of £6,500 and £5,490 from Whalley Parish Council for the same period. Whalley, Parish Council

ist at an estate agent’s, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Alec West, of Painter Wood, Billington. The brid eg ro om, a

has further made a capital expenditure of £8,730.98 (inclusive of legal fees) for the non-recurring purch ase of the 10-acre site and further non-recurring

capital sum of £8,186.30 on the entrance — making

a grand total of £41,585. I would also like to put

into context the statement at the meeting that £3,000 is needed to put the fields in good condition. It will cost less than

£100 to return them to their pre-May 1983 condi tion. However, £2,900 may have to be spent over the next five years on annual maintenance — fertilising, weedkilling and goalmouth restora tion, together with sand ing, subsoil draining and spiking of the- topsoil (a very thin layer on top: of solid clay) to get 100 per cent efficiency from the drainage system already established. May I also add to Mrs

Pat Harper’s plea for har mony for the sake of the young people of Whalley and district. The whale to ta l of

£41,585 that has caused so much acrimony is just about what would ’ be asked for a. modest de tached house! •
