A FIRE warning has been issued to people using the countryside fol lowing weeks of dry weather. Mr Roy Watson, Lanca
shire’s chief fire officer, urges people to take spe cial care and emphasises five points for. countryside safety. Cigarettes should be
extinguished properly and should not be thrown to the ground or from car, bus, or train windows. Camping stoves should
be kept away from vege tation and open fires should never be lit. Children should be
taught never to play with fire and all litter, especial ly glass, should he cleared after a picnic. Sun shining through glass can easily start a fire and rubbish will help it to spread. Finally, Mr Watson
urges people to contact the fire brigade immedi ately if fire breaks out and cannot be exting uished.
Drove at 100 m.p.h. on bypass
A MAN who drove at 100 m.p.h. on. Sawley Brow crossed the double white lines and overtook an un- marked p o l ic e c a r , Clitheroe magistrates were told. Police followed Stuart
.Clitheroe, and at times their car’s speedometer registered 90 m.p.h., but his Lotus Europa still pulled away from them. . Mr Philip Howard, pro
James Isherwood (31), of Moorland A v e n u e ,
secuting, said that Isher wood, a garage prop rietor, turned off the bypass on to the Pimlico Link Road and-continued driving at sp eeds in excess of the 30 m.p.h. limit. The magistrates fined
Isherwood £50 for failing to comply with double white lines, £100 for ex ceeding the 60 m.p.h. speed limit on the bypass and £50 for speeding in a 30 m.p.h. zone. He was ordered to pay £6 costs. Counsel for Isherwood,
Mr Keith Thomas, said that the. car belonged to his client’s father. After repairing i ts engine, Isherwood took it for a test drive. He did not realise that he was being followed by police and was not attempting to evade them.
