Green not being by pensioners

I WAS pleased to read the remarks by Goun. Bert Jones about the charge for pensioners’ on the Castle bowling greens.

Stephen’s canoe race

victory C L ITH E R O E S cou t Steven Petty, of Railway View Road, paddled his way to victory in his class in Sunday’s River Ribble rapid race from Edisford to Ribchester.

Steven (14), a pupil at

Ribblesdale School, beat 45 Scouts from all over the North West to win the junior_slalom with a time of one hour 51 mins.

In the race, organised

by Preston Scouts, sever al C l ith e ro e d is t r ic t Scouts took part, but none had the success of Steven in any of the classes.

For Steven, a patrol

leader with St Mary’s Scouts, this was his first river race. He puts down his suc

cess to his trainer, Mr Fred Poole, of Cardigan Avenue. Overall, the day was

marred by very low water and several canoes were Holed.

First score

published C L ITH E R O E gu ita r tutor Nicolas Mackey (22) has had his first musical score, a Hebridean dance, published in the interna tional music magazine “Classical Guitar.”.

Nicholas, of Fairfield

Drive, who is principal of the Clithe ro e Guitar Studio, started teaching five years ago after leav ing Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School.

It is very reassuring to

know that Mr Jones and one or two more of his colleagues — and I am sure I may be permitted here to . mention Mrs Ethel Penny — who are really sincere and pre pared to do whatever possible to get this fee reduced or completely abolished. However, I . would like

to make one comment on Mr Jones’s remarks — that there were only 10 people using the green on the particular, afternoon he was there. That can be misleading

as I do not think so many of them would be pension ers. I have never myself seen or heard of 10 pen sioners being on the green. The most you can ever expect in one single afternoon is six and even then the number can vary from day to day. How cart any one

assume that six people are “monopolising” or “hogging” the green. In- any case most pensioners use their own “bowls and

jacks.” If it is thought that we

monopolise the green, then that may be the reason the authorities have decided on such an exorbitant charge. It is about time someone came along and put us in the picture.

South chose to lead the four

of. diamonds. After losing to the ace, the declarer won the next trick, drew trumps and played the ace and king of spades. When the queen of spades fell, the declarer made 12 tricks. The con trac t was well

played, as the losing finesse in spades was avoided. J f the queen of spades had not fallen, the declarer would have played another spade, which would have been ruffed. West would then have entered with the ace of hearts, the established spades allowing the declarer to make 12 tricks.

Health chief sees town’s computer set-up

CHAIRMAN of the Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Authority Mr W. Ian Woolley has visited Clitheroe Health Centre where he was given some insight _ into the developments in computerisation within the primary medical care services.

The Centre is- able to

provide “ on-line” com puterised data for 7 direct patient care together with epidemiological data for a g e o g ra p h ica l def ined population of 35,000 on the practice lists of 15 GPs.

Computer terminals are

also linke'd into the Clitheroe Community Hospital and the GP surgeries in Whalley.

Mr Woolley was also

shown the computerised electrocardiograph system which was the first appli cation of its kind in gener al practice in Europe and North America when in troduced in 1979. Immediate ECG report

ing facilities are now av ailable riot only at the Health Centre but also to over 90 GPs in the dis trict. The. recent develop

ments of Clitheroe Hospi tal into a Community Hospital Jhas enhanced the links between both health care establishments in C l ith e r o e , providing, major benefits in the primary health care field. The role of the. Communi ty Hospital will be. the subject of a future. visit by Mr Woolley.,

Keep-tidy discussion

CO-OPERATION from villagers in Whalley is needed if they hope to do well in this year’s Best Kept Village competition. Whalley Parish Council

has decided to hold an open meeting on Tuesday to discuss the competi tion.

Mrs Clara Horsfall said

a sub-committee should be formed, but members of the public would have to help out.

Big crowd at Gisburn races

A CROWD of about 8,000 made the Pendle Forest and Craven Hunt’s Gis bum races the best at tended in. the , last (0 years.

Held at Westby Hall

Farm, Gisbum, on Satur day, all six races had the spectators biting their nails because, of the close ness of the finishes.

The race for members

of the hunt was won by Mr Michael Bannister, of Coniston Cold, for the ninth time. His first vic tory was in 1954.

Only two of the four

runners finished, Mr Ban nister on his own mount Bell ’Busk beating Vul- gan’s Trout, ridden by Jane Brooke, of Gargrave and owned by Mr John E dm u n d s , o f W e s t Marton.

APPOINTED CHAIRMAN

THE new chairman of the: Ribble Valley Talking Newspaper Group is Mr Jim Metcalf, of Dunsop Bridge. His appointment was

made at the annual meet ing of the group at Trinity M e th o d is t C h u r ch , Clitheroe, when Mr Stan ley Snape became the new vice-chairman. " Elected to the commit

Jumble sale A jumble sale in the

Vale House sheltered ac commodation at Whalley on Saturday was organ ised by warden Mrs Phyl lis Jolly and the residents’ committee. • Proceeds will go to local community ac tivities and charities. Donations from other

social activities at Vale House have already been made to the Mayor of Ribble Valley’s fund for Children in Need, Whal ley Lions and The. Queen Elizabeth II Playing Field Committee.

Near completion Negotiations between

Whalley Parish Council and Ribble Motor Ser vices for the purchase of the Vale House garden site in the village centre are now near completion. Administration of the

site will come under the Parish Council and appli cations from local organ isations wishing to make use of the facility for social and other activities should be made to the parish clerk with at least three months’ notice.

Hectic pace The normally sedate

pace of life {in Whalley has been shattered in the last few weeks by the ac tivities of a large group of young people from the vil lage’s Methodist Youth Club. They made £150 from

their annual tumble sale and followed that six days later with. a sponsored disco, from which they made a further £150. The money is to be

used in several ways, some going to the general costs of running the club and a large sum being set aside for research into multiple sclerosis. Soon 20 members will

be joining groups from Clitheroe and Rishton for the annual national MAYC we ekend in London. ,A day trip to Alton Towers is also plan ned for the summer.
