for not having insurance, £40 for driving without due care and attention and £30 each for failing to stop and failing to report an accident. He explained that he

Successful first
venture
A UNITED Advent carol service held at Whalley Methodist Church was well attended. The service was organ
ised by Whalley Christian Action Group, which in cludes the four churches in the locality. It was conducted by the
Methodist minister, the Rev. Clifford Foster. Members of the churches read the lessons and the combined choirs led the singing.
The Methodist choir .
sang a hymn, the Angli can choir a psalm, and the combined choirs then per formed a chorus from the Messiah, “And the Glory.” It was the first time the
group has held a united Advent carol service and it was considered a suc cessful venture.
Found dead at home
A POLISH ex-Serviceman found at his home in Alma Place, Clitheroe, oh Tues day morning, is believed to have died several days before from natural causes. Mr Wincenty Czabrows
ki (71), came to Britain at the beginning of the second world war after the Germans pver-ran his country. He was attached to the Polish forces and saw service at Monte
Casino. He later settled in
Clitheroe and worked at Atkinson’s for a number
of years. Mr Czabrowski was
widower, and Clitheroe police are appealing for any relatives to contact them.

four out of six bottles of pasteurised milk were :’ound to have deposits adhering to the inside. Mr Stephen Barker, de
fending, said that the firm had processed 10,000 bot tles of milk each day for three years without com
plaint. The bottles had re
mained together while they went through the process of washing, filling and crating and that was why they had all landed on the same doorstep. The four bottles had slipped the net and were not segregated for hand washing. “It was human error on the part of mem bers of staff and would not have happened had the bottles not been left to get in that condition by a customer,” said Mr Barker. Mr Crosier had stressed
forcibly to the staff the need to carry out proper inspections. There was no complaint
about the quality of the milk, said Mr Barker.

A CHOIR of about 100 swelled the congrega tion at Clitheroe Parish Church on Sunday evening for the first rehearsal for Sunday Half- hour to be recorded by the BBC Radio on December 12th.
The Vicar, Canon J. C. Hudson, welcomed every
one to the church. Organist Mr Charles
Myers conducted the mus ical rehearsal. Owing to family illness, assistant organist Mrs Judith Raw- linson was unable to be present, but her place was taken at very short notice by the Rev. John Salsbury, who was ap-

He gave September’s an niversary concert at Clitheroe for the Parish Church Organ Society. The choir and congrega

Promoted inspector
LOOKING forward to promotion to inspector at Clitheroe in the New Year is Sgt Peter Clague. At present, the division
training sergeant at Ac-, crington, he is to take over from Insp. Bill Moore. Sgt Clague will con

PLANS to build three dwellings on land to the rear of Padiham Road and Thorn Street, Sabden, have been thwarted by the Ribble Valley Coun cil’s Development Sub committee. The application, in out
line, for Mr J. Robinson, was objected to by many nearby residents. Mr Philip Bailey, the Planning |
council’s
Officer, recommended re- fusal on the grounds that | the application did not provide, or indicate, a satisfactory means of access to the adopted
highway. Furthermore, as the
proposed access to the site was intended to be Thorn Street, this was felt to’ be most unsatisfac tory because of the poor visibility available at a right-angled bend, and also at the junction of Thorn S tr e e t and| Padiham Road.
Additional hazards
would be created by the use of the road by in creased traffic and in the interests of road safety and good highway plan ning it was felt the plan should be resisted. Also, the proposal
would constitute undesir able backland develop ment.
