THE style and panache of the 1930’s swept back into the area this week when the magnificent new Manhattan Suite at the Fence Gate Restaurant, Fence, was opened. The opening of the suite, which has been built in the

atmospheric art nouveau style of the 1930’s, is the culimi- nation of extensive planning and substantial investment jy Mr Kevin Berkins, a Pendle man, who took over, ownership of the Fence Gate at the end of October last

time that there was a need for a first class banqueting suite to accommodate both large and small party functions so I decided to completely rede sign, refurbish and re equip what is now the Manhattan Suite to fill the gap that there has been in the area for so o n g , ”

year. “I had felt for some

s a i d Mr

Berkms. The Manhattan Suite

itself has been equipped to handle all types of exhibitions, conferences, banquets and entertain ment requirements,- but in addition to this there is also a second suite under construction, ad jo in in g the building, which, when finished, will cater for smaller groups and functions.

Ah advertising feature ..„ by Paul Smith

The decor of the Man

hattan Suite is both im pressive and extravag ant with new furniture in the lounge and dining room that provides all thecqmfbrtadinercould wish for. The walls are covered in pink and grey suede and illuminated p la n t a r ra n g em en ts lining both sides of the

room c om p le te s the tasteful picture.

Decor Another valuable asset

is the chef de cuisine, Mr Gary Newsom.

Mr Newsom has a.

vast experience of cater ing and has worked at

several of the top hotels in the country including

th e w o r ld - fam o u s Gleneagles. He has also been awarded many cer tificates of distinction for his culinary art, and his speciality is a beautiful carved buffet.

The staff is headed by

the manager, Mr John Ellis, who arrived with the owner Mr Berkins. Mr Ellis’s record speaks for itself having previ ously been the general manager and co-director of Northcote Manor as welf as the deputy gen-

eral manager at the Last Drop Hotel.

Mr Ellis originates

from Blackpool and was trained at the Radcliffe catering college, near Manchester.

“The Manhattan is the

finest banqueting suite in the north of England and this area has ■ never seen anything like it before. It is really what the area has been wait ing for,” said Mr Ellis.

“The suite will accom

modate up to 300 people but it is designed in such a way that small parties do not feel out o f place, and we have, tried to think of everyone with facilities for the disabled and more alterations in the pipeline.” -

Facilities The Fence Gate does,

in fact, seem to have given a great deal of thought towards the satisfaction o f its cus tomers with anyone who is planning a wedding reception now having the contrasting choice of the traditional elegance of a 17th century Geor-

hattan Suite with its at mospheric 1930’s image.

S'an manor house or the The Manhattan also

manages to blend the latest up to date disco lighting with its pre war s e t t in g and has the popular Paul Jason as the resident disc jockey who was brought in spe cially from Liverpool.

One of the biggest ad

vantages that the suite has is its easy access from all over the north west. .

Access Situated just off the

Manhattan Suite. Pic tured at the top- is the splendid spacious bar area with its comfortable

seating and above is a view highlighting the ele gance and style of the suite, set up for dining. Unashamedly extravag ant, the room provides everything a discerning diner looks for.

within easy reach of Ac- c r in g t o n , P ad iham , Colne, Clitheroe and Bamoldswick. There is

■ also ample parking space for crowds that will soon be making their way to the new social highlight of the area.

So with more altera

tions being carried out all the time and more amenities adding to the comfort and enjoyment of its customers, it is obvious that the Fence Gate is looking to the fiiture and it certainly seems to be rosy.

Who knows?. It may

be that the Manhattan Suite with its 1930’s air could bring the good old days back to the area.
