Padiham inflict first defeat on Clitheroe
Padiham 135 for 6, Clitheroe 134
CLITHEROE were defeated for the first time this season thanks to a superb individual performance by Leon Hines, Padiham’s West Indian newcomer.
He took 5 wickets
for 35 runs and then proceeded to hit 86 not out with the bat. Such performances will
certainly help Padiham’s league challenge and might very well secure for Hines the professional status he seeks. Clitheroe were put in to

a big total on a small ground, but the wicket suggested that Padiham could well struggle if Clitheroe’s bowlers got on top. At 36 for 4, Clitheroe were looking favourites for the five

Hines avoided the dangers of the pitch, hit hard on the leg side and shielded his more vulner able-looking partners. With four deliveries remaining he struck the winning run. A very good result for Padiham who are now’ on 27
Eoints, one behind the Chat- urn Road side. But Clitheroe
will be wondering what would have happened had they dis missed Hines earlier.

score at a rate of 5.91 runs per over to beat Langho. The Chatburn Road side de

went, the run rate decreased and with wickets falling Clitheroe at one stage needed nearly 12 runs an over. A gal lant e f fo r t was made by Clitheroe’s tail enders but to no avail, Clitheroe ending on 169 for 9, three runs short of the 3pt total. Langho: Total (for 5 wkts)

CLITHEROE took one point from a losing draw in their home match with Baxenden. Asked to bat first, Baxenden got off to a great start with P. Cleg g making 59 and C. Knowles a solid 39, thus help ing the visitors to a first wicket stand of 102. Ormerod, Hodgkinson and
Cronshaw each scored 21, and all fell to Geoff Cartledge who was Clitheroe’s only wicket taker with 4 for 54. Baxenden finished with 180

Read victory keeps them in touch
Blackburn Northern 123 for 9, Read 127 for 6
READ kept in touch with the league leaders picking up another five points by beating Northern by four
wickets. For the second week in suc
cession they found themselves up against a Lancashire League professional, this time Accring ton’s David Parsons was stand ing in for Peter Wood who was reported to have had an acci dent with his contact lenses.
Northern wron the toss and
elected to bat on a wicket “sharpened up” by overnight rain.
Their captain John Halsall
soon had cause to regret his decision as he was caught by Richard Goodway off a rising delivery from John Wad- dington.
The wicket was olienng con
siderable assistance to the bow lers and when Philip Hanson replaced Graham Bushell he and John Waddington kept the scoring rate below’ three an over. Only David Verity man aged to survive for any length of time and he needed plenty of luck as Read missed several sharp chances in the field. At 88 for 7 it seemed unlikely that Northern would reach three fi gures but Peter Jones joined verity and put up some spi rited resistance, hitting an un defeated 23. Verity finally fell to Bushell for 41 and Northern survived their full 36 overs and
reached 123. Read might have expected to
find batting equally difficult as
Parsons whistled several de liveries past Michael George- son’s nose in his first over. Stephen Rushton had other ideas and slammed 50 in just 36 balls, with 9 fours and 2 sixes, as the opening pair put on 78 in the first ten overs and put victory well within reach.
Spinner Peter Jones found
the wicket to his liking and removed Rushton for 53 quick ly followed by Neil Barnett for a duck. Graham Bushell then hit a quick 19 and Read were all but home and dry at 105 for

Whalley have to settle for losing draw at home
Whalley 129 for 4, Barnoldswick 199 for 6
WHALLEY only managed a disappointing losing draw when they played host to Barnoldswick at their Station Road ground on Saturday.
Barnoldswick batted first and
in making their 199 off 35 overs, scored at a rate of 5.71 per over. Whalley’s leading wicket
taker was Ken Snellgrove, who returned figures of 3 for 76. John Staniforth was Whalley's only otner successful bowler, taking 2 for 57. Barnoldswick fielded very
tightly when Whalley batted. Snellgrove, the Whalley pro, was out for 13, and his opening partner, P. Macintosh went for 1. Whalley’s top score was made by M. Fallon who made 60 precious runs. Derek Hig-
