Market traders want to
lease stalls
TRADERS occupying permanent stalls on Clitheroe market want to lease the property in future instead' of operating on their present week-to-week basis.
: But members of the
Ribble Valley Public Works and Health Com mittee hinted at their meeting on Tuesday that they would drive a hard bargain when they de cided to meet- traders’ representatives to discuss the matter.
Council solicitor Mr
Paul Timson said that the move had obvious advan tages from the traders’ point of view.

It would give move sec 20 fif drti FRO™ 5 However, it gave . the
council less control hver the. stalls and it would
make it more difficult to move people out if prob lems arose.
Waddington (Gisburn) felt that they could lose con trol of the stalls perma nently -and Coun. Bert Jones (Clitheroe) thought that if such a drastic change was made the traders should make some sort of investment in the buildings.
Chairman Coun. Harry , “They might be held re
sponsible for such things as repairs,” he said.
Mr Timson also pointed'
out that at present, the market was rated as ah entire unit and the council paid the rates.

Laughter and mystery star in Philip’s world premiere
BECAUSE the mother of 15-year-old CRGS student Philip Eccles loved the novels of Agatha Christie, 13 young actors trod the stage of Clitheroe Girls’ Grammar S ch o o l on Friday and Saturday. Philip inherited the bug
— he had a collection of 58 “whodunnits” to inspire him, dominated by “Ten Little Niggers” — and the result was “The Strange Affair at Farnsworth Manor,” a clever, enter taining and surprisingly mature

were numbered. It must be said that they took the situation re
markably calmly and showed little apprehen sion. Where suspense is concerned then, we must admit th a t th e la te lamented Mr Hitchcock
would have done it rather better. But certainly not at 15 years of age. Philip had every right'
to be proud of his achieve ment. A “world premiere”
is the laughs it raises, Philip’s work was very successful; there were laughs and chuckles from start to finish. If the aim was to mys
tify, then again the play was a success; the audi ence was certainly mus- tified. If this comedy thriller had a weakness, it was in
the area of suspense. One by one the principal play ers were due to become bumped off — after the first three or four had been eliminated, it must have been rather painfully clear to the remainder that their hours, too,

Under-used bus service to be axed
THE Ribble .Valley is to lose the Ribble-operated X27 Liverpool to Barnold- swick bus service after March 19th. So few people use the
service that Lancashire County Council and Ribble propose rerouting the buses through Barnold- swick, Colne, Nelson, Burnley,; Accrington, Blackburn, Feniscowles, Hoghton and Preston. As this would mean the
area between Chatburn and Barnoldswick being served by Betty’s Bus only, it is proposed to op erate three round trips between Clitheroe and Earby on Mondays to Saturdays along the route of the current X27. There would be con
necting facilities, at Earby for Skipton. Ribble Valley residents

Diseased trees being
replaced DURING the next few months about 850 new tr e e s will have been planted in the Ribble Valley, many of them re placing timber ravaged by Dutch elm disease. The replacement is
Peter Chambers (voice). Several of them showed
considerable talent, one or two a very real aptitude, and we look forward to seeing them again.
The play was directed
by the author and Valerie McDonald (who was re sponsible for the stage management). Lighting was by Graham Wilkinson and Tint Milne-Redhead; sound amplification by Glenn Hawthorne.
If, at the end of Fri day’s first night, the audi

warmly given for he and his company provided them with a very good night out.
