Bn-form Clitheroe show no hangover

and pile on six Clitheroe 6, Vulcan Newton 1

they buiied Vulcan Newton under an avalanche of goals Eric Whalley’s men

found the snow-co vered Shawbridge pitch very much to their liking, recording the club’s best win for more than two seasons. Clitheroe showed no

hangover from th e ir recent FA Vase and Lan cashire Junior Cup ex ploits and took command in the 15th minute. Ronnie Drugan’s point blank shot was pushed

away, but the resulting corner from Ian Ashworth went straight past every one into the far corner of the net. A minute later, the

lightweight David Shar pies, very much at home on the slippery surface, put David Proos clear to shoot past the advancing Meadows. The goal highlighted Vulcan’s problem — they

just could not operate their offside trap prop erly. In the 39th minute,

Sharpies struck again with an immaculate cross field ball' which set up Drugan for a race with Meadows. The Clitheroe midfiel

der just won to drive in a first-time shot from 25

yards. Three minutes later,

Vulcan’s defence was in shreds again as Drugan and Taylor worked the ball across for Proos to tap in his second goal. A repeat of England’s

9-0 win over Luxembourg looked on the cards, but to their credit Vulcan came out fighting after the interval and forced some fine saves from Denis Underwood.

Clitheroe stormed back,

though, to pile on the pressure and twice Shar pies came w ith in a whisker of scoring.

IAN ASHWORTH

Scored direct from a corner.

The inevitable fifth

goal, which came in the 70th minute, would have done the Brazilians proud. Ashworth and John

Taylor produced a split second wall pass to leave two defenders stranded with Ashworth going on to slam the ball past Meadows. Nine minutes later,

Clive Dunn capped a typi cal hard afternoon’s work in midfield with his first goal for Clitheroe, again beating the offside trap to shoot home. In a final flutter, Tray-

nor pulled a goal back for a disappointing Vulcan side whose only grievance could have been the refus al of what looked an obvi ous penalty right at the start of the game. Mr Whalley, on the

other hand, could not have asked for a better Christmas present from his players. They must now surely

go into the big New Year’s Day FA Vase clash with Ossett Albion with their confidence sky-high.

RUGBY REPORTS

Rugby plans halted b Arctic weather

y

THE weather put paid to all of Clitheroe Rugby Club’s plans last week with the cancella tion of the matches against Ilkley and the coaching session with Alan Old. The coaching session "winning games

will now be staged on January 13th. Training did go ahead last week with R o g e r Hughes taking the session which 30 players attended. Over the holiday period

the club fields scratch XVs against Rossendale on Christmas Sunday, kick-off at Littlemoor at 11-15 a.m., and a Colne and Nelson XV on New Year’s Day kick-off 2-30 p.m. at Littlemoor. The next time the club

fields two teams is on January 8th when Orrell are the opponents. Training is as normal on

Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 7 p.m. over Christmas. Saturday’s cancellation

was the first of the season and would have seen C l i th e r o e f ie ld its strongest 1st XV possible

against Ilkley. After a difficult start to

the season results in the last two months have im proved with both teams

Waddington match a thriller

CLITHEROE Reserves were hoping to follow up their win over local rivals Waddington with another success on Sunday against Trawden Celtic. But the big thaw left Shawbridge heavily waterlog ged and the game had to be called off.

The game with Waddington

the previous week at Roefield was a real ding-dong affair.

Clitheroe took a two-goal

lead through Dave Ashworth and Simon Whiteside and al

though the villagers soon re duced the arrears, Ashworth struck* again to maintain Clitheroe’s two-goal advantage.

Before the break, though,

Waddington were again back in the game to make the score 3-

2. But the second half was

dominated by Clitheroe and Steve Conti sewed up the points with a late fourth goal for his team.

Hoping to arrange

Christmas games

CLITHEROE are trying to arrange two games in successive days over Christmas in the build-up to their big FA Vase clash on New Year’s Day. They are already due to

travel on Boxing Day (27th) to meet lowly Bolton ST (kick-off 2-15 p.m.). But every e ffo rt is

being made to stage a game at Shawbridge the following day, with either Bacup Borough, who should have p la y ed Clitheroe on January 1st, or Maghull likely to pro vide the opposition. Explained club chair

man Mr Cyril Whiteside: “We have several out standing league fixtures to complete after being in volved recently in cup competitions and obvious ly we would hope to at tract a good crowd during the holidays.” The crushing win over

Vulcan was in no small way due to the return to form of winger Ian Ash worth, according to Mr Whiteside. “We took our chances

on a pitch that suited our style of play. Our ball players like

Ashworth, who scored twice, Drugan, Sharpies and Taylor were obviously revelling in the slippy

THE Ribble Valley Pool Red League has new lead ers for the first time this season following the visit of the long-time leader Pendle Witch to the Lord Nelson. The latter were trailing

by six points in second place, so a 6-1 win over the Witch was sufficient to give them a point lead and a reminder that Nelson are the current winter league champions (they did not play in the summer league.) Third-placed Commer

cial A visited fourth- placed Joiners A and suf fered a 5-2 defeat that dropped them to sixth

place. Joiners moved into

third spot with the Hodder Bridge A and 7-0 winners King’s A taking a tied fourth spot. Only seven points separate the first six teams.

King’s Arms again had

a good night with their A team r e c o rd in g a “w’hitew'ash” and the B team remaining the only unbeaten outfit in both leagues thanks to a single frame v ic to r y o v e r Craven Heifer.

However, the King’s

lead over Tillotsons at the top of the Blue League was cut to one point as the latter won 6-1 at the Horse Shoe.

Joiners B moved into

third place with the Craven Heifer dropping to fourth some eight points a d r i ft o f the leaders.

A massive 12-point gap

separates fifth-placed Brown Cow, yet only eight points cover the re maining nine teams.

Top match this evening

must be the visit of the Kings to the Tillotsons with the leadership of the Blue League at stake.
