Banned for 12

months Tm mm

A CLITHEKOE man banned for 12 months for driving a car with excess alcdhoT in his blood said he had drunk only two and a half pints and had assumed he was fit to

drive. John Dominic Drews

(28), of Dunster' Grove, also told the town’ s magistrates that he had not thought he was over the limit and was sur prised when he was stop ped by police. He added: “I do not

drive when I have had more than two and a half pints, but order a taxi.” Mr Graham Duff, pro

secuting, said police fol lowed Drews after seeing him driving along Chat- bum Koad at an excessive speed. He was eventually stop

ped in ' Brown Street. Tests showed 97 mg of alcohol in 1(K) ml of blood. In addition to the ban,

Drews was fined £50, with costs to tall in g £23.30.

THE Key. Brian Cave, the new vicar of St John’s, Hurst Green, and priest-in-charge of All HallowSi Mitton, was offi cially welcomed to, the two parishes at the weekend. On Saturday afternoon,

at St John’s, he, was in stalled in.the two posts by the recently-appointed Bishop of Bradford, the Kt. Rev. Geoffrey Paul, who was paying his first visit to the village. ■ Afterwards, Mr Cave

was inducted as vicar of Hurst Green by the Ar chdeacon of Craven, Canon D. A. Rogers — a ceremony which was repe ated on Sunday mormng at Mitton. At Hurst Green, chur

chwarden Mr John Peel handed to Mr Cave the keys of the church, and

Mr T. Woodcock pre sented the electoral roll. Mr Cave then performed the traditional bell-ringing ceremony.

After the service, re

freshments were provided in Hurst Green Memorial Hall by the ladies of the church.

' On behalf of the PCC and parishioners;; Mr Peel. welcomed the Bishop on his jfirst visit and paid tri bute to the many lay readers and priests who have taken services since the Rev. Arthur Higgin- son retired two years ago. The service was at

tended by about .130 parishioners. About half that number were at All Hallows’ on Sunday for Mr Cave’s induction as priest-in-charge, when he was given the keys and electoral roll by chur-

chwardens Mr R. Birtwis-| tie and Mrs K. Hill.

Mr Cave’s first service

was evensong on Sunday at Hurst Green, where he and his wife 'Valerie and three children, Sarah (16), Andrew (15) and eleven- year-old Timothy have| settled at the yicarage.

The children, are to I

at tend St W i l fr e d ’ s| School, Blackburn.

The friendliness of the

people, the beauty of the area — and the weather! — have impressed Mr Cave during his first week in Hurst (Ireen. “I understand it rains a lot here, but we haven’t seen a drop yet,” he said. Picture:. Mr and Mrs

Cave with members of his new “flock” after Satur day’s service at Hurst | Green.

THE North 'West Tourist Board is to be reminded by the Ribble 'Valley Council of the need to consult with the council before em couraging proprietors of holiday accommodation to extend tneir facilities.

TELLY WILL REMIND WILE OF HAPPY DAYS WITH FIRM

EACH time Mr Wilf Davies switches on his portable television set, he will remember his friends at Bowker B ro th e rs’ Clitheroe factory.

For when Mr Davies

retired aher 29 years with the firm, his collea gues presented the television set as a farewell gift. And in appreciation of his long service, the firm gave him a gold watch and a gas heater.

Mr Davies (65), of

Waterloo Koad, Clitheroe, started his working life as a baker in the town. During the war he served in an Army field bakery. After hostilities he re turned to baking for a short time before joining Bowkers. _

He started as a cabinet

maker but for the past nine years has been a ser vicer.

Although

said a fond farewell to his colleagues last week, he hopes to return to the firm on a part-time basis. Tn Ws younger days. Mr

Davies playea cricket for Clitheroe and in 1935 broke the Kibblesdale League individual batting record, with 162 not out against Blackpool. ■ Although this has since

been broken — it is now 1'72 — the score waAall the more tremendous m Mr Davies was a. spin

bowler rather than a batsman.

He and his wife, Kita,

have a son, Graham, of York Street, Clitheroe, who also works for Bow kers as a machinist, and a daughter, Mrs Janet Slack, of Peel Street, Clitheroe.

Watched by workmates,

Mr Davies is pictured with works director Mr Ken Foster, who pre sented him with the gifts.
