THE total number of books borrowed from Ribble Valley libraries during the three months to the end of July was 157,882 — more than 1,000 down on the corres ponding period last year, when issues numbered 159,102. By contrast, issues fi'om

period.last year and 51,025 this year. This year’s figures ft'om

fi-om Whalley were fairly consistent, with 297 issues in May, June and July this year, compared with 295 last year. But cassette issues
from Clitheroe Library dropped drastically from 983 to 567.

eight votes to five, will now go before th e Policy and Resources Committee a t i ts next meeting.
In . a detailed report
submitted oy Chief Ex ecutive and Town Clerk Mr Michael Jackson, coun cillors were told that the Civic Hall cinema made a loss last year of £24J)00 arid that the estimated de ficit for this year was about £18,000. Coun. Fred Green
(Wilpshire) said the time had come to take a seri ous look at the whole future of the Civic Hall as a cinema. “I am not against the
continuance of the cinema, provided that we can find ways of reducing the heavy losses,” he said. “But a wider range of
activities should be looked for and encouraged, in a bid to make the Civic Hall pay its way.” “Total attendances at
the cinema have dwindled by almost 15,000 over the past two years and I feel I cannot support the spending of all this money to provide cinema viewing for ,a diminishing public which, as I see it, will lead to even higher losses to the ratepayers.” But Coun. Mrs Mary
Bridge (Clitheroe) said the Civic Hall was . a cinema for local people to' be proud of and every thing possible should be done to keep it going. Coun. Mrs Barbara
Speak (Clitheroe) said that the policy of not showing X-films encour aged family audiences and the standard of films on show was rapidly improv ing with new films being shown locally’ as soon as in the bigger towns. “That can only encour
age more and more people to come along,” she said. Borough Health and
Housing Officer Mr Peter Gladwin told committee members that the rear wall of the building, cur rently shored up to pre vent movement, is per fectly safe at the moment, but said the sooner work
was done, the better.
Good news for young anglers
JUNIOR fishing en thusiasts are now allowed to fish the 573 yards of the River Ribble from Edisford Bridge to Sid- dows Wood, the Ribble Valley Council’s Recrea tion and Leisure Commit tee has decided. A f te r a plea from
Clitheroe councillor Mrs Barbai'a Speak, members decided to lift the restric tion on youngsters which has applied since the land was bought by the council I in 1975.' ; “It is unfair that only adults should be allowed to use this stretch of river under the terms of''the council’s fishing permits,” said Coiin. Mrs Speak; “The youngsters, are
just as dedicated and are often hard-pressed to find satisfactory and safe areas in which to fisl;.” ■ It was agreed to lift the
restriction immediately for a trial 12 months.
Bright way to combat vandalism at Castle
THE illumination of Clitheroe Castle grounds at night would be one way of reducing the problem of vandalism, Coun. Brian Braithwaite (Clitheroe) told a meeting of the, Ribble- Valley Council’s' Recreation and Leisure Committee. "He said that since the |
gi'ounds were left open throughout the night, lighting of the pathways would encourage members of the public to use it as a short cut and recreation area, making it much more difficult for vandals to carry out destruction. Deputy Chief Planning
Officer Mr Peter Nock told committee members that vandalism was still costing the council a lot of money in repairs, as well as causing the Parks staff I a great deal of worry. Recent examples of the
vandalism; he said, had included the sabotage of the flag-pole on the Castle keep during the visit of | Princess Margaret, which had involved sawing through padlocks. Coun. Ted Boden
(Chatbum), in the chair in
the absence of chairman Coun. John Walmsley (Mellor) said this inci
dent indicated that it was certainly not always chil dren, who were the cul prits. “It is very dishearten

CHATBURN 2, VICTORU 2
CHATBURN began their- season in Division One of the Ribble Valley Football League in front of a large croivd and in hot- condi tions. A draw was a fair result. Both sides appeared to be
evenly matched until Victoria gmned a free kick 20 yards but, and Peter Harrison’s shot seemed to be deflected home. ■Victoria had several chances
to go ahead but did not take advantage of them. Chatbum equalised with a
good move ending with Jim Coleboume heading home from Tony VVaddington’s head-on. The villagers now took the

drawn, the replay will be on Tuesday there at 7-30 p.m. Manager Keith Newton was
disappointed with the perform ance at Blackpool, but feels his players can still make progress
their areas in the second half, and Waddington and Bill Campbell were always active in midfield for Chatbum. Victoria’s equaliser was
scored when goalkeeper Keith Johnson completely misjudged a long-range shot by Harrison, with the referee over-mling an offside appeal. Chatbum forced several late
comers but the visitors’ keeper was equal to all efforts: Johnson made amends for his
