elected county councillor Clifford Chatburn, has voiced his opposition to the proposed comprehen sive plan. A former pupil of the York Street school, he believes its closure would be a “sad day” for Chtheroe.
Two years ago, it was
proposed to have two six- form entry mixed schools in Clitheroe — one based on Ribblesdale County Secondary School and another created by the amalgamation of the two grammar schools.
In addition, Rowland
County Secondary School would become an 11 to 16 mixed school with a two or 214-form entry.
But the governors of
the Grammar Schools felt the extension of the girls’ building was essential to avoid any split-site ar rangements. No funds for the exten
sion were then available, though. work started at the beginning of this year to provide a sixth-form unit there at a cost of £96,596. This is rt of a plan to increase the school’s capacity from two to three-form entry. Another extension at
the school, costing nearly £lm., has been included in the county’s building programme for 1982-83 to provide facilities for the extra 30 pupils a year who will be admitted when the present exten sion is finished.
Forest of Rowland oil fears
OIL exploration and even
oil wells in the Forest of Rowland are not beyond the realms of possibility, claimed a leading conser vationist this weeK.
Mr Robin Grove-White,
director of the Council for the Protection of Rural England, was speaking at the AGM of the Lanca shire Branch of the CPRE at Samlesbury Hall, Sam-
lesbury. “Under present proce
dures, drilling licences are awarded to oil compaiues without any attention whatsoever to environ mental consequences.
“That is the situation in
the Forest of Rowland, where Rio Tinto Zinc Ltd could now apply for per mission to dnll anywhere in much of the wonderful landscape of the Forest of Rowland’s area of out standing natural beauty, said Mr Grove-White in a prepared statement. He said the CPRE

were urging the Govern ment to change its proce dures for awarding oil drilling licences. The

walking back to the camp site along a coastal road where there was no pave ment, after an evening out. It was dark and the road was unlit. “According to Dean,
Martin was thrown over the bonnet against the windscreen and he himself received a glancing blow
from the car,” added Mr Halliwell. “Dean told us about the
accident the following day. Martin’s parents could not be reached for a couple of days because they were in Scotland, but a friend eventually managed to con ta c t them.” Mrs Burton declined to
comment about the acci dent, but Mr Halliwell added that he believed tests were still being car ried out at the hospital in A n t ib e s to c o n f irm whether or not Martin has internal injuries. “I understand he cannot

junction A GUARD rail is to be erected to discourage pedestrians from crossing at the centre of the con troversial new junction in the Salford area of Clitheroe. Since the junction of
W h a l le y Road and Queensway has been al tered, concern has been expressed about th e safety of old people and children crossing to local
shops. A count of traffic using
the junction did not jus tify a pedestrian crossing, but some safety measure was desirable, the Kibble ■Valley Council’s Public Works and Health. Com mittee was told. Members agreed that
the rail could stand at the front of the council’s car park by the junction. The £1,000 bill for the rail will be paid by the county council.

Footpaths ‘shocking’
FOOTPATHS in
Clitheroe’s Henthorn Road and Millthorne Avenue are in a shocking state, the Ribble Valley Clouncil’s Public Works and Health Committee was told. Coun. Bert Jones said
Grindleton Road, West Bradford, had suffered from Hodgkinson’s disease for the past six years. He leaves a wife, Judith
and 10-year-old daugher Cara Jane from an earlier marriage. He was the only son of
that although he had men- t io n e d tne problem before, no improvement work had been done to the footpaths. If nothing was done
before winter, someone was going to be hurt, he warned. Coun. Jones also re
ported that part of the main road through Bawd- lands had dropped by three inches, after recent ly being dug up and patched over. Concern about the con
dition of Primrose Road, Clitheroe, was voiced ,at the meeting, too. Coun! John Cowgill said the heavy lorries that now used the road had broken up th e su r fa c e and loosened kerbstones. Divisional Surveyor Mr
Richard Wordsworth promised to look into the members’ complaints.
