Rotarians renew ■ l pledge to serve fellow men

THE 75th anniversary of the founding of the - Rotary movement was celebrated by members of the Clitheroe and Ribblesdale Clubs at a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Church, Low Mo6r. T h e congregation of prayers were led by Canon

about^300 included many of John Hudson, vicar of

the 80 members of the two clubs, visiting Rotarians and friends, and represen tatives of o ther local organisations involved in voluntary community service.

, Also present 'were the

Mayors of the Ribble Val ley (Coun. Jimmy Fell) and Clitheroe (Coun. Bob Ains worth) and Clitheroe Divi sion MP Mr David Wad- dington.

The congregation was

received by the two presi dents, Rtn Eric Haigh (Clitheroe) and Rtn Barry Bearing (Ribblesdale).

The service was con

ducted by the Vicar of Whalley, the Rev. Alec Harpur, a member of the Clitheroe club, who refer red to the formation of the movement in America by Paul Harris.

Clitheroe and a former Rotarian at Padiham and Clitheroe. The address was by the

Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev, Robert A S. Mar- tineau, who spoke of the i community involvement of Rotary and other organisa tions and the part Rotary played in breaking down. international barriers. Members could all be

rightly proud of telling publicly what they were doing, but the Bishop also referred to the importance of anonymous service to those in need. During the service the

objects of Rotary were read by Rtn Dearing and at the conclusion members

Low Moor houses in for design award

THE Riverside Housing Scheme at Low Moor has removed an eyesore and added to the stock of low er-priced private housing in the area. This was stated by the

Ribble Valley Council’s Chi e f Ex e cut i ve , Mr Michael Jackson,

in a

report to the Housing Committee. He outlined the facts of

— or lose it! That's the message to Chatburn villa gers from the parish council. Members of the council

have been distributing leaflets in the village urg ing people to make the most of the library, which r e c e n t ly escaped the county 'council’s economic axe after being included in a list of 20 recommended for closure. The council fears the

branch could still face the axe should the county council’s Library and Lei sure Committee decide on further cuts. A p p ro p r ia te ly , the

speaker at the parish coun cil’s annual meeting on March 21st, in the school hall, will be District Libra rian Miss Barbara Snell.

the scheme, which had been successful in relation

i to its original objectives, and .said that subject to

certain remedial work, the contract was at an end. Although there had been

criticism about the houses’ appearance, it was a mat ter of taste and opinion. “Council officers share

the view of residents that the estate is most satisfac- I tory from a design and vis

ual point of view. Indeed it has been submitted for a design award,” he said. He o u t l i n e d the

pressures put on the legal and treasurer’s depart ment staff in dealing with a- large new scheme and the problems pioneers had to meet. In conclusion, Mr Jack-

son stressed that the need to help lower-income first- time buyers was still a great priority and while there were no immediate proposals to undertake similar schemes, circumst ances could warrant a

future project. Any such scheme would

be much smaller in scale and the administrative resources to handle it

l would need careful assess ment, although many of the basic problems had now been resolved. Coun. Mrs Beryl Cas

sidy described the report as a very good one.
