Clitheroe kick off in style

Clitheroe 3, Blackpool Mechanics 0. i :

CLITHEROE’S finishing matched the glorious weather at Shawbridge on Saturday. Three first half goals — two of them real beauties —

were enough to dispose of a competent, but erratic Blackpool Mechanics side. Clitheroe’s new-look side, showing four changes from

last season’s championship winning line-up, struggled to put any moves together in the opening stages and could well have gone behind but for timely last ditch tackles.

- All that changed in the 15th

minute thanks to a charge down the right wing by player- manager Ian Wilcox, playing at full-back. He clipped over a first-time

cross to Simon Whiteside who hit a splendid volley past stranded keeper Amfield. A fine goal to start the ,

season. On the half-hour, Whiteside

was again involved in a move which saw Roger Walker notch his first goal for Clitheroe since moving from Colne Dynamos. Whiteside did well to shrug

Keith Lord

Lord quits Clitheroe

CLITHEROE FC’s team ' attendant and trainer, Mr Keith Lord, has left Shawbrid ge a fte r 17 years. Player-manager Mr Ian

Wilcox made a personal appeal to Mr Lord to stay, but failed to per suade him from joining local Lancashire Combina t ion r iv a ls G rea t Harwood.

* Mr Lord has refused to go into the reasons for his sudden departure, al though he says he felt it was time for a move. The Lords have been associ

ated with Clitheroe since its formation some 50 years ago. Mr Lord’s late father, Arthur, was chairman for more than 30 years. Present club chairman, Mr

Cyril Whiteside, said Mr Lord’s resignation had been accepted with regret and Clitheroe wished him all the best. No replacement has yet been

appointed, the final decision re sting with Mr Wilcox. He was very pleased with

Clitheroe’s workmanlike display in their opening match and names the same squad for Saturdays trip to Nelson. Play ers are asked to meet at Shaw bridge at 1-30 p.m. A new face at the club’s

training sessions this week has been 22-year-old Ian Ashworth, of Padiham, who has toured America with Manchester United and turned out for their Central League side. “He will be an extremely

useful acquisition if everything works out,” said Mr Wilcox. Meanwhile, Clitheroe Re

serves start their season at Shawbridge" on Saturday against Ribchester (kick-off 2- 30 p.m.). Players meet ground-

1-30 p.m. With manager Mr Tommy

Townsend suffering from ill- health, Steve Rush has been appointed temporary player- manager.

Villagers too strong

West Bradford Res 6, Trutex 1.

AFTER a bright opening, Trutex were overcome by a more experienced West Bradford side in Monday s

friendly. The villagers were kept out

by some resolute defending, and Trutex opened the scoring

through Rhodes. ■ West Bradford recovered,

though, to lead at the break with goals from Ibbotson and

Maudfley. Some slack marking in the ,r,

second half saw Ibbotson hit a hat-trick and a late goal, by

'Moore rounded off the scoring. Trutex were well served by

off a couple of challenges to cross for Walker to rifle the ball into the net from 10 yards. To prove it was not going to

be the visitors’ day, they went further behind after an unfor tunate defensive mix-up.

Allen’s hurried clearance

under pressure from Paul Bretherton, who grew in confi dence as the game progressed, hit another defender and pre sented Simon Whiteside with an easy tap-in goal. After all that excitement, it

was hardly surprising that the second half seemed much quie ter, no doubt because the play ers were beginning to feel the heat. . Nevertheless, Blackpool tried

to make a game of it, only to be thwarted by some timely interventions, particularly from Frank Richards. Overall, Clitheroe's display,

albeit not against the best op position in the league, was con-

dent and entertaining. Perhaps most important, the

finishing power of Walker and Whiteside was impressive and clearly this pair are destined to bag many more goals this season.

Greenhalgh to the wicket. After a fairly, .quiet

start he opened up, pun ishing any loose bowling

severely. His unbeaten 84 in

cluded five sixes and nine

fours. So despite two wickets

in two balls in a second spell from Pollard, Bar- noldswick had reached an impressive 183 for 6 when the overs were completed. With Kawalec and

Morgan taking 15. runs from the first two overs, Read started confidently but their composure was disturbed when Kawalec was caught by Scothem off Dudha after making 18 runs. Six runs later Morgan was caught off Roberts and Rigby was run out without addition. Read now needed time

to consolidate and prepare for a later attack on the large total set for them. O’Connor' was caught

behind at 37 and Read were left relying on the experienced Hindle and' Goodway to rescue them from their predicament.' For a time this seemed

possible but Goodway, having decided that the time had come to push the score along more quickly, mishit a ball from Roberts and was cau gh t by Dudha. Three runs later, Wors

ley had been promoted in the batting order • after some useful knocks was also caught off Roberts and it became obvious that .all Read could hope

derers claimed some wickets at reasonable cost. With half the side out Earby

and although Sharp was caught on the boundary edge when three short of his 50, any possi bility of Wanderers taking five

out of the ground several times there even seemed to be an outside chance of victory goings to the visitors. However, the task was just too great and the overs ran out at 195 with four wickets in hand. Birch took a couple of good

Steve hits top score

Baxenden 112 for 8 Whalley 173 for 6

DESPITE a hurricane 83 from Steve Lawton, Whalley had to be content with three points from a 1 winning draw at Bax enden. It was the Whalley pro

fessional’s highest score of the season and he fol lowed it by taking four wickets for 23 runs. Lawton was at the wicket for

only 38 minutes and in that time he took 11 fours and four sixes off the Baxenden bowling. John Slinger stayed with him

for most of the time in a stand that was worth exactly 100. Slinger and David Bleazard

put on 20 for the fourth wicket which fell at 136 with Slinger being run out for 31; Bleazard and Keith Eastham

left at 155 and the innings closed with Stephen Wildgoose and Barrie Foster still at the crease. Baxenden made a promising

start to the reply, being turned 50 when the first wicket fell to Lawton. '

' They lost another to Marshall

when they were just into the 70s and then came completely unstuck as Jim Staniforth pro duced a killing seven overs in which three wickets fell to him for only eight runs. With Lawton • claiming another couple, Baxenden ar rived at 92 for 7. Lawton went on to claim his

fourth wicket but after that Baxenden held on for a point. Scoring rates were Whalley 5.24 an over, Baxenden 3.39. Whalley: J. Slinger run out

Baxenden 2nd 107.

NEEDING a win to clinch the championship of Division Two of the Rib blesdale Cricket League, Baxenden suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Whalley. Whalley made a poor start

and at 31 for 4, off 17 overs they looked to be heading for

another batting flop. However, G. Hindle (49) and

R. Eatough (13), put together a 49 run stand and the tailenders helped to give Whalley some thing to bowl at. Baxenden made a good be

ginning to the reply, but Robert Davenport and “veteran” Bob Singleton gradually tied the

batsmen down. Hesitancy crept in and Sing

leton began to get more and more out of the wicket to finish. with 7 for 44. A 12 run win was Whalley’s reward for a tenacious disDlav.

THE league rule, giving- three points for a “win-' ning draw" kept interest in this game alive for both sides until the last ball had been bowled. On a s o f t w ick e t

Clitheroe batted first and ended with 119 for 9 after

36 overs. They were indebted to a

sound innings of 30 from Keith i Fawcett wno maintained his excellent form although batting

. under serious difficulty from a strain which affected his run ning between the wicket. •He received steady support

from John Boden whose batting is now more confident and posi

tive. • On Fawcett’s departure

David Hardcastle took the mqjor role and played a most mature innings. His 34 included several powerful straight drives for four. Settle also found runs dif

ficult to collect. Skipper Alan Davidson was just beginning to look a. match-winner when he was smartly stuniped by Philip

Hall off Sutcliffe’s bowling. When Newhouse was caught

on the boundary by Colin Ward, again off Sutcliffe, their chance of victory went with him and they faced three overs of hostile bowling to avoid defeat. Fielding bowled Kendal with

the score at 89, leaving Ian Wilkinson to negotiate three balls to secure a losing draw.
