A TENSE penalty play-off ended Clitheroe’s hopes in the George Watson Trophy, against Chorley Res at Shawbridge on Sunday. But the team is still going great guns in the Combination, with a real chance of landing the title. Our picture shows the squad before Sunday’s match. Back, from the left,
are: Steve Rush, Simon Whiteside, Frank Richards, N gel Whiteside, Paul McGuire, Phil Morris, Alan Eden, Keith Jones. Front: Ian Sampson, Geoff Dover, Denis Underwood, Tony Eyles, Graham Walker.
Denis Underwood must have fe l t particularly upset. He saved two of the BA T T L IN G Clitheroe earned an acolade from five penalties he faced, but Chorley F C ’s general manager Mr Alan Spence his team mates Phil Morris fo r their spirited performance against his side in
Clitheroe’s play earns praise
and Keith Jones were the only ones who scored. Nigel Whiteside and Geoff Dover missed the target and Simon Whiteside’s vital shot was'saved. At one stage, Clitheroe
seemed to be sailing along, thanks to a couple of goals from Whiteside (S). But with only four minutes left Chorley’s nippy midfield man John Doyle snatched an equaliser, after block ing Frank Richards’s clear ance and slipping the ball past Underwood. It was Doyle who gave
Chorley the lead in the 17th minute, thanks to some hesitancy in the Clitheroe defence. Duncan Clarke was allowed to work his way down the flank and his cross found the unmarked Doyle who did the rest. The visitors included
several first-teamers in their side and they pro- vided a hard test for Clitheroe.
The Shawbridge men
were sluggish in the early stages, ana seemed to miss the promptings of Paul Clements, who was unav ailable. The state of the pitch did not help matters either, with many moves breaking down in the muddy wasteland of mid- field. However, C l ith e ro e
were back in the game in the 37th minute when Whiteside (S) slotted the ball home after a tremend ous run into the box by Graham Walker made the chance for him.
It was Walker who
posed most problems for Chorley, with the midfield trio of Eden, Ian Sampson and Paul McGuire battling away to provide th e ir front-runners with open ings.
McGuire’s quick think
ing in a tight situation paid off in the 75th minute. In a crowded box, he screwed the ball through to Dover who was hauled down by a desperate tackle by Black- ledge. Whiteside (S) con verted the penalty and that looked to have booked Clitheroe’s ticket into the next round. But the late C.horley
strike changed all that and Clitheroe were anything but spot on when it came to the penalty stakes. It was a good result for
ex-Clitheroe player Wayne Haddock, on his return to Shawbridge.. However he

Newsagent becomes chairman
C L ITH E R O E newsa- f
ent Mr P e te r Je f f re y s as b e en a p p o in ted chairman of Wadding ton FC .
Mr Jeffreys (36), who
runs the Henthorn Road shop, was approached by manager John Lund about taking over the vacant pos ition and after accepting the offer has been meeting committee members ana players this week.
He had his first taste of
action at Twitter Lane on Saturday, when he saw Waddington and Rishton fight out a 3-3 draw.
“I ’m just learning the
job at the moment and it will probably be a couple of months before I find my feet,” said Mr Jeffreys.
“But from what I saw on
Saturday, we have a lot of good lads at Waddington and the backroom staff are keen. With a bit of luck we can really start things moving.”
Mr Jeffreys hoped that
plans to e x ten d th e clubhouse could go ahead and something be done to improve the state of the car park at the ground.
“ In the summer, we
could perhaps also try to put the playing area at Twitter Lane into better shape," he added.
Mr Jeffreys succeeds Mr
Cyril Whiteside, who took over as chairman of Clitheroe FC at the start of the season. Mr Geoff Cross has been acting as caretaker chairman, but he now becomes president; Reserve team manager Mr P e te r Car ter has also resumed duties as sec retary.

Until then, it looked as
though Waddington were going to pay for not cash ing in fully on their early dominance. Had they taken all their chances in the first-half, they would have had a comfortable lead. Instead all they had to show for their efforts before the break was a single goal by Billy Miller. Problems piled up for
Waddington in the 65th minute when.Rishton drew level and goalkeeper Ian Nuttall suffered concus sion in a goalmouth melee. He had to leave the field and front-runner Paul Green took over between the posts, with substitute Steve Smith coming on. The home side went in
front thanks to a John Col- ebourne volley, but Rish ton bounced back and looked to have sealed the ■ game with two more goals.
Never in danger
of defeat
Clitheroe 1st 7pts, E c c lc s l th 0
A WHIRLWIND start gained Clitheroe Rugby Club seven points in the first five minutes of their home game with Eccles. Once again, the condi
tion of the pitch dictated the style of play. John Coates kicked a penalty goal for Clitheroe soon after the kick-off, and while the surface was still firm and the ball dry Ash ley Parkinson scored a try. He dived over the line after a quick attack by the threequarters. The mobility of the
Clitheroe forwards, and the speed of their backs, threatened to destroy Eccles, but as the ground churned up a different style of play was enforced. In the mud, the pack had
to work hard to prevent their heavier and more experienced opponents taking control. The Clitheroe front row
— Howarth, Dinsdale and Sweeney — held their ground in the scrummages, and the rest were active in the loose. The defence broke up all
the Eccles attacks, and at no time did those seven early points look to be ,fn danger.
