weather of defeating third division Hurst Green Reserves for, despite having most of the play, they turned . round with a two-goal deficit.

came from V. Holden in a breakaway, and from a K. Holden penalty. Within 10 minutes of
Hurst Green’s goals
moving up front Devine set up a goal for Kay but was still not satisfied. Gid- low lobbed a free-kick over the defence and Devine ran in to head an excellent equaliser. H u r s t Green were
always good value but tired on a pitch which was heavy going down the middle. Kay, who has recently
regained his position in the Trinity first team, put the result firmly in his side’s grasp with 20 minutes left. He then completed a hat- trick with two well-taken

the tally for a final 5-2. Hurst Green played in
good spirit but were even tually outplayed by Trin ity, for whom Devine, Meyler and Kay were out standing. Embery played well for Hurst Green.
GLUT OF GOALS IN CUP-TIES
THE second round of the Ribble Valley Football League’s Aitken Shield competition produced a
glut of goals — 88 in fact. And in the tradition of cup games there were some unexpected results. •
With a tally of 23, Hurst
Green must have set a record that will probably survive for a long time but it must be emphasised that they were opposed by only a nine-man Station Hotel
side. Division One club Read
United had the mortifica tion of being vanquished by Third Division Whalley A by the odd goal in five, and the needle game bet ween Division One high flyers Cross Keys and Whalley Arms' Celtic ended as 1-0 for the Lon- gridge outfit. Two games went into
extra time, Grindleton doing well to hold Division One leaders Ribblesdale AFC to 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes. The other game was between Waggon and Horses and Calderstones, both Division Two sides. This ended in a 4-2 win for the hospital club. Second highest score of

ON A fine afternoon for football Trinity Reserves entertained second divi sion side Rimington in the second round of the Aitken Shield. Both teams took time to settle and the early play was keen but scrappy. Rimington took the lead
after about 20 minutes. Winckley pushed a shot against the bar and a Rimington froward ran the ball into the net. Although Trinity con
tinued to strive hard they did not trouble the visitors’ defence and two further g o a ls were conceded before the interval. Afterwards, Trinity set
