letting procedure at the re quest of Coun. Fred Ellis. (Billington). He said the policy of
selling council houses could lead to a serious situation at Billington, where there were more applicants than houses av ailable. On the other hand, there were those who did not accept tenan cies offered. . Mr Onslow described
the committee’s merit scheme for determining tenancies as “fair,” be cause it allowed council lors .to apply local, know
ledge. However, under the
n ew . housing act now going through Parliament, it was possible that the committee would have to look at this policy and submit it for approval. There had been occa
sions when the committee had been alleged to have been unfair, but these had notbeenproved. “We have done no other than make humane. decisions,” said Mr Onslow. Coun. Bert Jones said
that while the number of applications for council houses was increasing, the sale of council houses was reducing the number available. “Unless we are pre
pared to replace those we sell, the problem will be with us for evermore and it will become more vex atious,” he declared. The committee, he added, should get its priorities right and take steps lead ing to a rapid reduction in the waiting list. Mr Onslow assured
Coun. Ellis that the coun cil was doing the best it could with the money av ailable, and Mr Michael Jackson, Chief Executive, said there were plenty of safeguards and a rigid points system was not wanted.
Residents petition against
caravans
RESIDENTS in Kirk^| moor Road,■ .Clitheroe, want’ the caravans for | homeless people removed from their area and they l have petitioned the Ribble Valley Council’s Housing Committee asking for action, ■
Seven people signed a ■■ ■
petition read by .Coun. | Fred Green (Wilpshire), committee chairman, com- ] plaining about, the “goings on” and expressing dis tress at some of tne be
haviour. .The petition also said:
“This behaviour cannot be , tolerated; we have had 10 years of broken sleep, be cause of wagons and it is time we had some relief. We ask you to find a more suitable place for the caravans than an area) that is under pressure. ”' The committee is writ
ing to the petitioners to say the complaint will be inquired into. A letter will also go to the social worker concerned. ’. Mr Gordon Onslow,
Borough Treasurer, said I the facts behind the peti tion were correct and he reminded the committee that it was intended to make the Kirkmoor Road area into a residential one.
