Spring show brings out the smiles

A BRAVE display of daffodils and hyacinths gave members, of Rimington and District Hoi- ticultural Society good reason to smile at then

spring show. The Memorial Hall glowed with spring colour

on Saturday, the only dull note being the limited public support. Those who did attend enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon.

Awards were presented

by Mrs Betty Thompson wife of Mr T. R. Thomp son, society president. She was introduced by chairman Mrs W. M. Elli son, who was accom panied on the platform by Mr Ernest Sedgwick, the energetic secretary.

The award for the best

exhibit in the show went to Mrs IC. Schosland (Roughlee), who also took the prize for the best pot

plant.' Best floral art entry

was made by another Rouglee member, Mrs M. Randall. The prize for the best children’s entry went to D. Thistleth-

waite. The horticulture classes

were judged, by Mr Roger Hirst, Ribble Valley parks superintendent and

AN application to build a bungalow at Smithy Garage, Tosside, has been turned down by the Ribble Valley Council’s Development Sub-Com

mittee. It felt the proposal

would not be appropriate in such an area of out standing natural beauty and, if approved, it could lead to similar applica tions, which would be dif ficult to refuse. An outline application

to erect a detached bun galow on land at Read Park,' Read, was refused for similar reasons. A further .objection was made on road safety and highway p lanning grounds.

Paper sales pay club heating bill

SALES of waste paper continue to be the major source of income for Clitheroe’s Pendle 1

Club. Last year, says the

nnual report of the

Jlitheroe Old People’ s Welfare Committee, sales cleared more than £1,800.

This income has taken

on added importance be cause bf the increasing cost of heating • the club

building. At £762^ for the year, the oil bill is up by some 50 per cent on the previous 12 months and the club owes much to | its energetic waste paper

team. Acknowledged also is

its indebtedness to Rib blesdale Cement employ ees “for their large and regular subscriptions,” to Trutex' and ICl for sub- stantial contributions of waste paper and card board, and to others who regularly give quantities [ of papers and magazines.

During the year mem- I

bers had talks, musical af- ternoons, a flower arrang ing demonstration, a couple of outings and a birthday party.

Other activities were

whist, bridge, old-time dancing, keep-fit, crochet and cookery classes.

The Ribblesdale Rotary

Club is gratefully remem bered for decorating the television room and pro viding a. fitted carpet and new curtains in time for Christmas.

Last year the luncheon

club provided nearly 2,500 meals at a cost of just over 60p such, of which the Ribble Valley Council made a subsidy of 31 V4p. Appreciation is expressed ^ to the voluntary helpers — cooks, servers, regis trars and transport driv ers for their regular help.

The report and financial

statement were approved at the annual meeting, at which the following offic ers were elected: Mr J. Robinson (chairman), Mr Brian Haig (vice-chair man), Mrs J. R. Biehler (secretary), Mr E. Tolson (treasurer).
