Visit old burial

CLITHEROE Naturalists spent Saturday walking in and around Feizor. They set out from the top of “Bucka” Brow to join an old bridle path giving access to open country. Specific areas visited were “Dead man’s cave” and a Celtic wall — an 80 yard feature some five feet thick marking part of an old burial ground. It was then on to Feizor

COMPLAINTS from walkers about aggres sive geese hissing at them when they use a public footpath have been taken up by Chat- burn Parish Council. The council decided at
its annual meeting to for ward the complaint to Lan cashire County Council’s footpaths inspector. The footpath crosses
land belonging to the Owen family who moved to “Whitecroft” bungalow, off Pendle Avenue, Chat- burn, two years ago. Mrs Elizabeth Owen,
plained about Mrs Owen’s dog running at them and barking. The council heard that the previous residents of"Whitecroft"had a fence separating the footpath from animals and poultry. It was said the fence had now been taken down. Mrs Owen said there had
no point in having land if one could not allow poultry and animals to roam freely
She felt that there was

however, was surprised that the matter had been debated by the parish council. She said: “No one has complained to me about the geese. I know they frighten some people, but no-one has been bitten.”
“Trudie,” a Doberman, had been bought as a guard dog. She barked at stran gers — which she was sup posed to do — but she was really “a big softie.” She added that neither
the dog nor the geese had ever attacked anyone; the

they found the footpath, an old public right of way, “a nuisance." But there was no question of deliber ately keeping geese and a dog to deter people from using the path.
Mrs Owen admitted that
shire County Council said the complaint about the footpath would certainly be investigated, “but unless there is some legal requirement preventing geese being allowed on a public footpath there is not a lot that can be done.”
A spokesman for Lanca
was the first time he had heard of a footpath case involving geese. He added, however, that if a dog had bitten anyone then there was a legal recourse.
The spokesman said it

LOW MOOR Good Com panions were entertained by Mrs B. Broome, with old- time songs. The attendance was less than normal because several members were on holiday. Mrs A. Frankland won the competition to guess three articles wrapped in par cels. After community singing, afternoon tea was served by Mrs Metcalfe, Mrs F ran k lan d , Mrs Burgess and Mrs Crooks.
