not so many years ago, when people thought of diesel engines as noisy, smelly and unsophisti cated pieces of machinery which has no place in the family saloon car. For years, the world of com mercial vehicles has made full use of the advantages which the diesel engine has to offer, but the ordi nary motorist has had lit tle opportunity to see for h im s e lf how muc h cheaper to run a diesel engined car really is.

major car manufacturers have begun to produce diesel engined cars which look no different from the ordinary family saloon. At one end of the range of diesel engined cars there are the large and luxurious models made by Peugeot and Mercedes and at the other there is the humble Volkswagen Golf. It looks then as if the

diesel engined car is here to stay. But what are the advantag e s and how much better off would the ordinary motorist be if he went diesel? To try and give some

idea of the pros and cons of the diesel versus petrol question, we looked at just one medium sized family car. This car, with an odinary petrol engine, cos t s £3,873 at p re budget prices and its diesel engined brother cost £4,250. That is a dif ference of £377. Set against this, the

arithmetic to work out that it would take the

important advantage of diesel engines, after the fundamental matter of cutting the cost of motor ing, is that contrary to popular belief they are much cleaner than petrol engines. Pol lut ion in today’s cities would be considerably reduced if everyone turned to diesel to power their cars. So far as engine per

diesel engine has no s p a r k plu gs to be replaced and no dis tributor to wear out . Although for the ordi nary motorist it is prob ably of little practical value, it is worth noting that a diesel engine is expected to keep running for around 250,000 miles without needing major attention as compared with only about 100,000 miles for, a normal petrol engine.

There seems, then, lit

tle doubt that the diesel engine is more economi cal in the long run than the petrol engine. The question is, can the ordi nary motorist afford it in the shor t term? The wor ld’s oil resources would last a lot longer if everyone went diesel tomorrow, but with all due respect, the ordinary motorist is more con cerned with his own short term family budget than he is about the long term problems of the world fuel crisis.
