TWO girls from Ribble Vall ey Harriers ran

. well in the first North ern Women’s Cross-

■1 Country League event at Blaydon.

ik

Against 200 girls from all parts of the North, Deborah Hammonds (14), of Fairfield Drive, finished third. Miranda Whightman (13), of Chatburn Avenue, was 35th.

It was an excellent result for both girls, but par ticularly for Miranda, who has just moved up into the junior age bracket.

Deborah ran in this age group last season.

• their depth in reserves, R. Wildman. and D. Fielding coming into the backs ana J. Bolton making his first team debut at wing for ward. All of them had a good game.

Clitheroe opened up the from the kick-oft, the

backs demonstrating their running and handling abil ity. The town team concen trated on basics. The pack worked hard in the loose to win good clean balls. These were fed quickly to the backs who efficiently pas sed down the line to the wingers. It was from such a move

that right winger Lund scored a good try under the posts for Wilson to con vert. John Coates added a very good penalty kick and Clitheroe led 9-0 at half time. It seemed that they

were going to pile up the points, but, with backs rearranged, some good moves lacked the required finish. Clitheroe did however,

score through a Coates’ penalty kick and continued to play open entertaining rugby. Calder Vale scored two

Coal Board manager, lives in Accrington but has been a Clitheroe member for around 20 years. He succeeds Mr Lawry Dent, of Whalley. . Highlight of the

customary inaugural match between teams led by the captain and the retiring captain was Peter Koine’s hole-in-one with an eight-iron at the 145-yard eighth.

Waddington turn on pressure

Waddington 2, Crown Paints 2

WADDINGTON lost a two-goal lead and with it the chance to shatter their visitors’ unbeaten record. Crown were joint Pre

mier Division leaders at the start of the match but had no answer to the villa gers’ first half attacks. John Kirk put Wadding

ton ahead and the interval- lead would have been grea- ter but for the woodwork twice coming to Crown’s rescue.- Waddington continued

to apply the pressure and grabbed a second goal when Gardner scored from Rimmer’s free kick. It all turned sour for the home side in the later stages when mistakes at the back enabled Crown to snatch a couple of goals and take a point. Even so, it was a good

performance by Wadaing- ton and if they can repeat this form they will soon be back among the title chal lengers.

PACKAGE Wigan Rovers 0, Clitheroe 2

TWO late goals saw Clitheroe to their first away win of the season on Saturday. The only surprise was that they could not find a way through the Wigan defence earlier in a very one-sided match.

New on the telly

strip

TELEVISION cameras will be at Shawbridge on Saturday focusing on Clitheroe’s efforts in their Lancashire Combination match against Chorley Reserves.

But fans need not rush

to tune in to “Match of the Day” to see the lads in action for it is new spon sors Cam-era who are film ing the game. The firm specialises in closed-circuit television and will be pre senting Clitheroe with a reel of the clash. Saturday is “Cam-era”

day at .Shawbridge and Clitheroe will be officially presented with their new blue and white strip, donated by the firm, before the kick-off. Another of Cam-era’s

sporting interests is motor rallying and some of their cars will be on show at the ground. The draw for the next

round of the FA Vase has been made and Clitheroe have landed a home tie with Ossett Albion on October 27th. Their squad for jaatur-

day’s game is: Underwood, W h ite s id e , L aw s o n , Richards, Sampson, Owen, Clements, Eden,. Walker, Morris, Lester) Eyles, Wright. The' reserves have an

away fixture at Roches ter. The team will be selected from: Dennett, Humphreys, Rush, Robin son, Conti,'Taylor (R), Taylor (J), Aspinwall, Jones, Tudisco, Portos, Hull,. Townsend. Players should meet at the Bridge Inn at 1 p.m.

HIT BY A QUICK

GOAL St Matthew’s 4,

Waddington Res 0

INJURY-HIT Wadding ton were rocked by a goal in the first minute and never really' recovered. The reshuffled side came under heavy pressure and conceded a further goal before half-time. Waddington kept fight

ing but were unlucky when appeals for a penalty were turned down. After going three, down, they lost Leach' with an injury. Their fate was, sealed

when the home side scored its fourth in the closing minutes. Tony Wadding ton and Boyd tried hard for the villagers but did not have much support. • Waddington Res: Phillips,

Boyd, Carter, Leach, Walker, Colebourne, Waddington,

Smith, Conti, Byrom, Hutchin-. son. Sub: Eglin.

The pattern was set

right from the opening minutes when Clitheroe created a bevy of chances — but missed the lot. Wigan’s goalkeeper was

a busy man and he also enjoyed some slices of luck . when Phil Morris rammed a shot against the bar and then Bernard Lester hit the post. It was still deadlock at

half-time and Clitheroe failed to make further headway after the break. Phil Morris was pulled off and Glen Wright, back after injury, went on as substitute. Twenty minutes from

time the move paid off. Wright dummiea a free kick on the edge of the box and instead Paul Clements curled it into the net. After waiting so long for

th e b r e a k t h r o u g h , Clitheroe scored again in

.the next minute. This time it was Lester who latched on to a.through ball t'o do the trick. There was never any

real danger of losing'the lead and, despite the wasted chances, the Shaw bridge men can be pleased with their display. Graham Walker and Lester were the pick up front and Neil Owen was always busy in

midfield. C l ith c ro e : Underwood,

Whiteside, Lawson, Richards, Sampson, Owen, Clements, Eden, Walker, Morris, Lester. Subs: Eyles, Wright.

KEITH JONES. . . hat-trick for Reserves.

Hat-trick bobst for reserves

Clitheroe Res 4, BAC 2

A HAT-TRICK by Keith Jones helped Clitheroe’s “second string” to a fine win at Shawbridge on Saturday. Keith's first came when

a fine run by Portos set him up with the chance. It was still 1-0 at the interval, but BAC began to domi nate things and Clitheroe’s defence looked rather shaky. However, Mick Hum

phreys sent Len Aspinwall away with a great pass and he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to put Clitheroe two up. The visitors pulled a goal

back, but Jones scored again to keep Clitheroe on top. A second BAC goal caused a few tremors for the Shawbridge men but Jones made the game safe when he rattled home a

tremendous left-foot shot. Clitheroe Res: Dennett, Humphreys, Rush, Robinson, Conti, Taylor (R), Taylor (J), Aspimvall, Jones, Tudisco, Por tos. Subs: Hull, Townsend.
