BOYS and girls from three Clitheroe primary schools proudly display their Road Safety Cycling Proficiency certificates which they worked to obtain during the summer holidays. Each youngster received his award individually, with a word of congratula
tions from RibbleValley Mayor, Coun. Jimmy Fell, at a presentation evening at Edisford School.
‘ Watched by parents, 70 pupils from Edisford, St James’s CE and SS
Michael and John’s schools stepped up to collect certificates. The cycling proficiency courses were held at St James’s School during the
holidays and attracted a large number of children, who will now be better road-users and more safety-conscious as a result of the scheme, organised by district road safety organiser Mr Neil Cunliffe.

Blow to school nursery plans
A PLAN to boost numbers at some of the small village schools in Lancashire Education District Three, which includes the Ribble Valley, seem certain to be shelved following £3m cuts prop osed by the County Council’s Education Com mittee. .
• Di s t r i c t Educat i on
Officer Mr Fred Calvert was hoping to s t ar t nursery classes at some of the area’s smaller schools, where numbers have been depleted recently. But the cutbacks' prop-
o s ed by County Hal l looked likely to ruin the idea, the District Educa tion Committee was told. However, Mr Calvert
maintained that the cuts would have "very little effect" in the district. As in other areas of Lan
cashire, the schools would have to put up with cut backs in meals and fuel. Unde r , count y council plans, individual schools would be allocated a quota of oil for a year and be expected hot to exceed that amount. : “But. if the county coun
cil’s figures prove ridicul ous, we would be forced to ask for more oil,” he said. Another proposal which will hit the parents of chil-
' dren taking O-levels “sad dened” committee member
•Mr Tony Cooper, who is a teacher at Clitheroe Royal .Grammar School. • The county education
'committee intends to pay for a pupil to take exami nations in only seven’ sub jects, rather than the pre sent nine. Parents will have to pay for additional examinations taken by their children. ■ The district committee has sent a recommendation to county hall “regretting" the move. - • - " • ?
