faithful service
LONG-SERVING members of Clitheroe Parish Church choir were honoured on Sun day for their stalwart service.
Brothers Tom and Jack
Wigna ll, of Chatburn Road, Clitheroe, were joined by four fellow songsters who stepped up to received gift tokens and a letter of congratulations written by the organist of Blackburn Cathedral, Mr John Bertalot.
The awards were pre
sented by Ribble Valley Mayor Coun. Jimmy Fell. They were able to talk
about old times and in par ticular the journeys to other towns where the choir used to perform. Mr Horace C. Pye, of
W a d d i n g t on R o a d , Clitheroe, remembers these well.
is rewarded . .
.. “We "used to look for ward to the excursions;” he said. “But nowacfays the increase in the number of cars around has killed off some of the romance of such events.” Born in Clitheroe, Mr
Pye joined the choir 65 years ago. He and his wife Phyllis have a son John, who lives in Blackburn and a daughter, Brenda, of Chester. Prior to his retirement,
he worked with Rolls- Royce, Barnoldswick, and a t W a t e r l o o M i l l , Clitheroe. He is a member of Clitheroe Cricket Club and used to be a keen bowls player at the Chat- burn Road ground. Mr William Calverley, of 'H a w t h o r n e P l a . c e ,
WHALLEY Parish Coun cil has again postponed a decision on whether to make cash grants to the two football clubs in the village.
It is a council rule that
organisations applying for g r a n t s must submit balance sheets.
Whalley Arms Celtic has
provided figures but Whal ley FC (formerly Whalley Rangers) has still not pro vided the council with a copy of its accounts.
Grants decision deferred Coun. Peter Lancaster
said he was opposed to giv ing money to the clubs. He mentioned the Whalley Celtic sheet, comparing the club’s expenditure on various items to the smal ler amount it had contri- bu t e d to the Queen Elizabeth playing fields. But Coun. Michael
Green argued that'-Celtic should be given a grant. He successfully proposed that the decision be left until the council had seen Whalley FC’s accounts.

Storm over -museum in pub’ plan
A SUGGESTION that there are too many pubs in Whalley — and that one of them should be
turned into a cutural centre for the village _— provoked heated exchanges at Whalley Parish
Council meeting. Coun.' Michael Green
clashed angrily with Coun. Peter Lancaster, who claimed that the centre of Whalley was dominated by drinking establishments,- making the village, a. place where local families, could. not go for a peaceful even ing walk.
. -
Coun. Lancaster’s sugges tion that the Whalley Arms or the Swan
could.be used as a museum or cul- t u r a l c e n t r e w a s “codswallop.”
Coun. Green said "that
Whalley are well-run and ex t r eme ly clean. The inns have been in the vil lage for more than 200 years and it is., a gross exaggeration that parents can’t take their children out in the streets of Whal ley at night.”
Coun. Green admitted
that there was sometimes trouble,in the village and occasionally in the pubs, “ but t h i s ha p p ens everywhere.”
Pendle Club
WINNERS at the Pendle Bridge Club session were Mrs P. Adey and Mr P. Strange and Mr J. Harri son and Mr T. Adey.
He added that the coun
cil had no right to take away a man’s livelihood by closing down a pub.
C o u n . L a n c a s t e r
■ declared that one man’ s livelihood should not mat ter when the needs of the ile of Whalley as a le were being- consi

" ’ He said: “All the pubs in ’
appearance of the Whalley Arms and the Swan, say ing that Whitbreads Bre wery was to be deplored fo r not improving the exteriors.
He said attractive gar
dens could be laid on the land swallowed up in the centre of the village by the Whalley Arms car park.
“Can’t we have prog
ress,” lie said, proposing that the council should form a sub-committee to look into the cultural needs of Whalley with the possi bility of using one of the pubs for a centre or museum.
Coun. Lancaster’s prop
osition found support from one other councillor, but it was later agreed that the council would look into pos sibilities of improving cul tural facilities without bringing in the “ pub- closure” part of the prop osal.
