COMPLAINTS from residents in Back York Street, Clitheroe, about the condition of their road are to, be passed to Lancashire County Council.
.< . They say the one-way
street, which is used regu la r ly by cars leaving nearby Central Garage, is in a “ terrible” condition.- Housewife Mrs Mar
garet Marsh, who lives at number 5, has seen drivers get out of their' cars to inspect the springs after going over potholes in the road.
...
“ There are' so many potholes I often have trou- ble w ,’alking u .p the road,” she said. “Eve very time I left
the house last winter I fell over.”
..
- H e r neighbour, Mrs Nan Pratt,' is convinced that people must be ruin ing their cars by driving on
•the road. “The road’s a real mess, especially when it starts raining,” she said. Mrs Pratt stressed that
no-one was complaining about the garage, but they
.just wanted the surface improving. Joint owner of the gar
age,'Mr Ronald Capstick, said the road had not been, too bad until the council renovated cottages in the street almost two years ago. “All kinds of workmen kept coming to dig up the road then fill it in,” he
added. The residents com
plaints were voiced at the Ribble Valley Council’s D e v e l o p m e n t S u b - Committee by Clitheroe councillor, Mrs Ma r y Bridge
. . But Chief Architect and
Planning Officer, Mr Charles Wilson, said the road was the county coun cil’s responsibility and that he would pass on the grie vances.

Record-breaker at Whatley
WHALLEY and Dis trict Horticultural Soc iety’s show continues to break records. This year’s entry of 518 was 133 more than last yearns record-breaking
figure. More exhibits, and an
attendance of over, 300, created a space problem in the Methodist Hall. The show is clearly outgrowing the facilities, a problem to which the committee will seek a solution before next
year’s event. The president, Mr Basil
Greenwood, opened the
show, which was visited, unofficially, by David
Waddington, MP and the Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Jimmy Fell.' Judges were: Ro g e r
Hirst (flowers), Clifford Moorhouse (vegetables), Mr A. Varley (wine), Colin Cook (eggs), Mrs C. Hill,
