complete political some rsault when he speaks of a “nasty scar” on the land scape should the develop ment of “an eyesore” take place at West Bradford. If Coun. Gretton is so

of “I am in full agreement with letting them all in, provided they do not come near me.” ? Surely, Coun: Gretton,

what is good for the goose is good for the gander. I salute your audacity but deplore your wisdom. Perhaps you can explain?

, AT A recent meeting of the Ribble Valley Council’s Development

•: Sub-Committee, there i was a discussion on, ■ proposals for improve ment to.the Three Riv-.

> ers Caravan Park, West Bradford. Coun; Gretton (Grindle-

ton and West Bradford) made serious disparaging r emarks which have angered residents on the site. To say that the site is

“already a nasty scar on the: landscape, and that further building would be even more of an eyesore,” either suggest that he has never seen it, even though he -resides in the area, or that his opposition is extre mely subjective that it approaches the realms of dishonesty.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The residents on the site

: are well aware of any ! shortcomings that may exist for the time being, but resent the Councillor’s description “a scar on the landscape.”

The site is in a delightful

spot, nestling in wooden country and quite out of sight of anyone passing the park. In fact, it cannot be seen at all except perhaps from the slopes of. Pendle, and even then, only’ vag uely — roofs among the trees in the distance.

The gardens around each home are substantial

and very well kept and cul- t i v a t e d ' wi th l o v e ly rosebeds, and will compare very favourably with any development in the dis-; trict.

Many of the residents on

the site are mobile homes, occupied and owned- by retired workers, and also people still employed in the Clitheroe and surrounding district.

This argument has to ignore the victim .

ONCE more we have a lengthy letter from Mr Frank Wilson in which the reader will search in vain for any sympathetic refer ence to the innocent vic tims of crime: Apparently ;we musn’t

(in . a letter, incidentally, with which Mr Wilson makes no attempt to deal) the abolitionist can only make out any sort of case by concentrating atten tion on the criminal and ignoring the victim lying on the ground with his head beaten in or his face blown away.

It’s a peaceful retreat with no vandals

FO L LOWIN G Coun. Gretton’s objections to a development at Three Riv ers Caravan Park, I would say that the park is hidden from public view, and not, therefore, an eyesore.

MRS B. BRIGGS, 59 Pendle View, Three Rivers Park, West Bradford

Come and see our homes

WITH reference to the statement by Coun. Gret ton to Ribble Valley Coun c il’s Development Sub committee concerning Three Rivers Caravan Park, I challenge him'to see for himself the pride residents take in their homes and gardens. I hope he never comes up

here asking people to vote for him and that he will

have a good look around- Clitheroe, where he'will see some real eyesores.

INDIGNANT RESIDENT, Three Rivers Caravan Park

be horrid to the criminal, no matter how dastardly his treatment of his victim. As already pointed out

He now suggests that

we should concentrate on criminal compensation for the victim, even though he has to admit that “this is not always directly poss ible . . . ”

In fact, adequate com

pensation for the victims- of violent crime is rarely possible and in the case of murder never so.

Claimin g th a t the

“appropriate penalty . . . does not consist of lower ing ourselves to the level of the criminal . . he ignores the fact that that is precisely what we are doing if we do not take every possible action in our power, including the use of

T h e y - Baugh a t fines

IT is quite obvious that Mr Wilson is one of the few

who believe in giving the criminal help and feeling sorry for a person because' of his or her background. Rubbish. I am sure'that

if the issue was put to:a vote among impartial offic ers and the public, the majority would vote for hanging and the birch. Making a criminal pay

through a fine is ridicul ous. .What payment is there for the loss of a loved one?

Criminals today receive

with — but not for the relatives. What do they feel like? Some court'cases take so

long that a lot of upheaval has died down as far as the public is concerned. But if you are ■ personally invol ved, the fact that the cul prit has got away with it is always with you. I think the police should

be, given more freedom in dealing with, criminals. How the police keep their hands off a person who has brutally beaten a child, or anyone else for that mat ter, is beyond me. In school as well, a clip

round the ears from a . teacher never did anyone any harm. To the couple who think '

that Coun. Ainsworth should not air his views in public, I say this. If there were more people, what ever their vocation, willing to speak their mind in the

a fine and come out of court laughing to sign a cheque. For them it is then done

the ultimate deterrent, to protect the weak and inno cent members o f our society..

The complete answer to

•the abolitionist’s emotive talk about “demands for more brutal punishment" is that we have tried his methods over the last decade with the increas ingly deteriorating effect' on. law and order clearly present for all to see.

. With the obvious failure of Mr Wilson’s methods, it would seem that the time has come to try the alter natives.

WHY I SIGNED

IN reply to the letter by. the Burtons in last week’s issue,,no doubt, there are many who agree with them that I should not have ; signed my letter “Mayor of . Cutheroe.” Why did I do it? You

may say it was vanity or egoism, but it was neither. Many people have asked: “What can we do to stop this violence that has got • progressively worse over the years?”

:» So I gave a lead by voic

ing my opinion, believing that if I signed a letter as Mayor, the greater would be the impact. .Obviously it was. Are the Burton satisfied

with the present trend? Many Clitheronians are not, and it is on their behalf that I speak. Hav ing given a lead, if the- mumbling grows to g rumb l in g , and the grumbling grows to rumbling, then I think the prospective Parliamentary candidates would be fool ish not to take heed. Could it be that the Con

servative and Labour can didates, wish to avoid giv

ing their views? Is a vote more important than a

principle? There will be an election .

in May next year. If the people of Clitheroe, of which I am proud to sign myself “Mayor,” feel I have denigrated that posi tion, make no mistake, they will be my judge and jury, and rightly so, but I still.re-affirm what I wrote in my first letter — bring back hanging and birching for murder and acts of vio- ■ lence.
