Handled stolen bacon

A BARROW man who appeared before Clitheroe magi s t ra te s on t hr e e charges of handling stolen bacon had not previously been in trouble and had a high business reputation, said Mr W. D. Greenwood, defending. William Sagar Whitwell
said Whitwell was inter viewed by Regional Crime Squad officers who were inquiring into thef t s of bacon sides in Blackburn over a period of months. They found some of the
bacon in an outhouse at the defendant’s home. Whitwell told the officers he had bought the bacon as “straight.” Mr Greenwood said Whit
over the past 14 years to build up his business as a contractor and had a high reputation for the quality of his work. It was too late in the day when he realised that the bacon had been sto len, added Mr Greenwood.
