Whalley 141 Earby 142 for 5
WHALLEY posed few problems for Earby when the league leaders visited Station Road and strengthened their title challenge.
On a fast wicket that
offered little or no help to the bowlers Whalley opened the batting and made quite reasonable progress. Snellgrove was compara
tively quiet and most of the early runs came from John Slinger (26) who, as has hap pened several times, was out when trying to hook. Dennis Taylor and David
Blezard chipped in with some useful scores as Whal ley kept up a rate of around a run a minute to have 118 on the board at the end of two hours. In fact, they maintained
the tempo through most of the innings and Barry Fos ter emerged as highest con tributor with 36, scored all round the wicket. The vi l l a ge r s c ame
un stu ck when Earb y brought Greenhalgh into the attack. His right arm swin gers over the wicket moved a long way and
the.innings went into a rapid collapse for a f inal 141, which was nowhere near sufficient in the conditions. Al though Ea rby lost
Moore in Marshall’s fourth over they were never in any danger of losing. Ian Clark son gave one hard chance in the slips and later had to retire temporarily af t e r being hit by the ball, but he returned to complete a fine half-century. Despite this and a vigor
ous unbeaten 26 from Mike Chappie, who hit the ball out of the ground several times, Earby did experience a slow period and had to claim the extra overs. Whalley: Snellgrove c

Wanderers have to settle for point
Settle 124 for 6. Ribblesdale Wanderers’ 159
A RIBBLESDALE Wan derers’ team minus four reg ulars had to make do with a point at Settle.
Surprising thing was that ,
the Craven side, who scored 70 in an hour, more or less put up the shutters after Paul Seedle had taken two wickets in one over. Even when they needed only 36 in 33 minutes to claim the extra overs they played safe. .Wanderers’ skipper Ken
Proctor is having probably the poorest season in a long career and for, the fourth time he failed to score. But Ainsworth and Lamb fea tured in a sound, profitable second wicket stand, and after Ainsworth had gone Dennett came along with a helpful effort. Lamb, usually a quick
scorer, tailored his efforts to the occasion. He held the innings together and was last out for 67, his highest score to date — one more than he recorded against Whalley at Church Meadow. Atherton, although not fully fit, bowled well to take
two for 22 in eight overs, and Wanderers’ fielding showed much improvement on some other games.
An encouraging sign is
that although they have still to put their game together Wanderers continue to make some useful totals. With two games to play this weekend there will be a good oppor tunity to improve thei r league position.

They’ve made it to the Oval final
TWO days off school, a tour of Lord’s cricket ground and a match at the world-famous Kenning- ton Oval — that’s what’s in store for 15-year-old Whalley cricketers Neil Wilson and Robert Daven port.
For the lads have reached
the national final of a schools’ cricket competition wi th Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Black burn. They helped the team
clinch a place at the Oval with good performances in the semi-final against Bir kenhead School on Monday. Neil opened the batting
and stayed at the crease for about an hour to help build a solid first-wicket partner ship of 47 towards the QEGS total of 133. Later Neil, of King Street, also took a wicket. Robert, of “Acrefield,”
Wiswell Lane, made his con tribution with a fine spell of bowling at a crucial stage in
the match, taking a wicket and restricting the Bi r kenhead batsmen to 18 runs off seven overs. Birkenhead were eventu
ally all out for 124. Neil and Robert will be
travelling with the team to London probably a week on Tuesday (July 4th), and staying at the Clarendon Court Hotel, near Lord’s.
On Wednesday the team
will be given a tour of Lord’s and meet the Essex and Middlesex teams, before having a practice in the nets. The final takes place on
the Thursday although it is not yet known who the oppo nents will be. Some 3,000 schools from 50 counties entered the competition
