TEACHERS HAVE NO PUPILS

TEN people have just qual ified as adult literacy tutors — but as yet do not have any pupils to teach. T h e 10 h a v e j u s t

completed a 16-hour tutorial course at Ribblesdale Adult Centre and have joined a team of more than 60 qual- ified teachers in Ribble

Valley. And this week the adult

literacy co-ordinator for the Ribble Valley, Mrs Pat Murray, has asked people to submit names of those who may benefit from literacy teaching. She said: “Now that we

have 10 more tutors we have the capacity to take on more pupils and are eager to do so.” She can be contacted on Clitheroe 24264 after 4 p.m. Anyone who can’t ring then, should contact Whalley Adult Education Centre (Tel. 2717). Mrs Murray would also

like to hear from volunteers to help prepare work cards and other exercises for adult literacy classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at Ribbles dale School.

Mr Colin Wrighton (24), of

De Lacy Street, one of the Lancashire Association of Youth Clubs’ canoe team, sprang a leak as he paddled along the Leeds and Liver pool canal in the early stages of the relay.

Said Colin: “It happened

just after we set off from Blackburn. There was a hole in the front of the canoe which obviously hadn’t been checked.

“I felt the water gradually

rising up but I kept going until the canoe was almost full. After that I had to keep stopping about every 500 or 600 yards to bail out the water.”

Fortunately Colin reached

Church safely where he was able to change canoes. “Even without that bit of drama taking part in the relay was an experience I’ll never forget,” said Colin.

Many other local people

took part in the event either as "relayers’’ or as helpers, among them Lord and Lady Clitheroe, of Downham.

relay was a tremendous success with everyone work ing together in a splendid f a s h io n . At th e end everyone cheered the Queen and then gave the particip ants a well-deserved cheer as well — it was most enjoy able.”
