TALK ON CRIME

FORMER controller of crime in the Post Office, Mr R. F. Yates, of Waddington, talked to Clitheroe Probus Club about crime and the great train robbery in particular. Members observed a

minute’s silence in memory of Mr Ellis Banks, treasurer since the club’s formation in 1370.' Seven new members — all locally retired profes sional or business men — were welcomed. Mr Tom Rushton, of

Clitheroe, was elected acting treasurer. Seats are still available on

the coach trip to the Forum Theatre, Wythenshawe, on May 3rd. At the next meeting, on

April 21st, Mr W. J. Slater wi l l talk about “More trains.” __________

Cake stall

A HOME-MADE cake stall was one of the attractions at a coffee morning organised by the Clitheroe branch of the Women Conservatives on Friday. It was well supported, making a profit of £40. Among the guests were- Divisional Women’s chairman Mrs M. E. Kay and Conservative agent Miss Mary Dutton.

FRIDGES, carpets, pictures and bric-a-brac were the order of the d a y a t C l i th e r o e Auction Mart when Clitheroe Round Table held its grand charity auction. M a n w i t h t h e

hammer, Mr Robin Addyman, sold over £260 worth of goods for Round Table charities. More than 100 people

visited the mart. Among the higher prices paid were £31 for a carpet, £14 for a desk and £14 for two pictures show ing the site of Clitheroe Library, before and after it was built. The event, organised

by the Round Table’s w a y s and m e a n s convener, Mr Brian Eastwood, equalled the success of last year’s charity auction, which raised a similar figure. Pictured are some of

th e h e lp e r s at the auction. Back, from the lef t: Geoff Tennant, Roland Hailwood, John Berry, Robin Addyman and John Newberry, who was installed as the Round Table’s new chairman on Monday evening. Front: David H e p w o r t h , Mik e Wa t k i n s , Norman Ilouldworth and Bob Cleeve.

Villagers play at find the bus

FROM the day Gas Board workmen left their job unfinished, Chatburn bus travellers did not know which way to turn.

When they queued at

one bus stop, they saw th e bus di s appear towards Clitheroe down the next street. And when they swap

ped streets and stops — so did the bus! The root of the passen

gers’ problem is work started, but not yet completed, by the work men, who are renewing a gas main. And while their holes

were causing congestion in narrow Downham Road, Ribble Motor Services set up a diver sion on nearby Ribbles dale View for the 232 service from Downham to Clitheroe. But after only a few

days digging, the work men, contracted to the Gas Board, patched up

■ the holes and left. Then, some bus driv

ers saw that the road was clear and began revert ing to the normal route — but somebody forgot to take the diversion sign down. So pensioners, school-

children and workers have been tossing coins to decide where they should wait for the bus. Mr Ronald Kay, of Robinson Street, which connects the two routes, has been concerned about older people living at the top of the village. “A lot of pensioners

around here rely on the service to go to Clitheroe for thei r medicine, because there’s no chem ist in Chatburn,’’ he said.

“With buses coming

from two directions, they feel safer making the long haul down into the village, where they can be sure of catching a bus,” he added. Mr Kay pointed out

that many workers had lost money waiting for bu s e s whi ch neve r arrived, making them late for work. Rib b le ’s Di s t r i c t

Superintendent Mr Leo Wells, who is based at Clitheroe, blamed the Gas Board for not c ont a c t ing the bus company about the work men’s disappearance. “We have a duty,

whenever possible, to provide a normal service. In fact we’re licensed to run only on specified routes by the Traffic Commissioners,” he said. But a spokesman for

North West Gas said that the bus company should have waited for approval before ' reverting to the

normal route.. The villagers, though,

may not have heard the last of the diversion saga. The Gas Board spokes man explained that work on Downham Road still had to be finished, when the contractors found enough men to do the job.

That means the diver

sion sign could once again haunt the villagers.

FOLLOWING an exceptional run and a creditable win the previous week, Ciitheroe Rugby Club were brought down to earth with a resounding thud by Grasshoppers, who gave them much to • think about. Clitheroe were without Rudd

and Routledge in the back divi sion, and Dinsdale, Corless, Sweeney and Wrigley from the forwards. The Preston side settled quickly

and with the Clitheroe forwards disarranged by changes in the pack it was easy for the visitors to take the ball and give it out to the backs, who made excellent use of it.

the Clitheroe backs, Grasshoppers would have scored far more than th e i r 24 points. However, Clitheroe had some luck, for the visitors missed four penalties. Late in the half, the home pack began functioning well and provided the push to make better use of the ball. Clitheroe’s try came from a chip

But for the splendid tackling of

and passing the ball out with speed. This was hardly surprising for the side included four first team players. Clitheroe, to their credit, never gave up and tackled solidly to the end. Clitheroe: Wilson, Parkinson,

Greatorex, Thorton, Lund, Spiers, Roberts, Jones, Byrne, Horsfield, Ramsay, Williamson, Peacock, Fox, Gregory.

Headingly visit

CLITHEROE Rugby Club face their match of the season this weekend when Headingly will return the visit made to them in October for Clitheroe’s inaugural game. Clitheroe are fortunate that

ahead by Roberts which was neatly caught by Lund who sides tepped a defender and ran the rest of the field to touch down under the posts. Preston, however, began once

more to dominate the game, the backs handling very proficiently

Golf winners

WINNER of an 18-hole stroke competition at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday was B. T. Clarke with 85-16-69. Second was D. R. Eastham 76-5-71 after a play-off. Best gross was D. G. Joss 76 after a play-off with B. E. Eastham. In a re c e n t team match

Clitheroe Ladies beat Bury Ladies 4 and 3. Winners of a four-club competition was Mrs F. Seed with 110-34-76.

Tight at top

THE last week of the Ribble Valley Ladies’ Darts League prog ramme has produced a fascinating finish. Craven Heifer, who have led all season, could be pipped at the post. The slipped up last week when

they allowed bottom-placed Victoria to hold them to a draw. Now, they must take three points from their final game if they are to be champions. It may not be easy. They meet

Station Hotel, who are only six points behind them and jointly in second place with Royal Oak who therefore also have a good chance of taking the title. Margins are so close that there could well have to be a play-off to decide the champ ionship.

League placings: Craven Heifer

144, Royal Oak 138, Station Hotel 138, Black Bull 135, Ribblesdale SSC 131, Horse Shoe 129, Bonny Inn 119, Pcndle Witch 118, Fiel- den's Arms 113, Whalley Arms 112, King’s Arms 104, British Legion 101, Cross Keys 98, Judge Walmsley 97, Catholic Social Club 96, Victoria 83. Highest finishes: J. Birtwistle

CLITHEROE town darts team have a Lancashire Darts League game on Sunday away to Accring ton at the King’s Arms, Lee Street, at 12-30 p.m. Registered players are asked to attend. Leaders of the three divisions of

the Clitheroe and District Darts League maintain their positions. League placings after 24 games:

TT title OPEN singles champion of th e Ribbl esdal e Table Tennis Association is Tony Waddington, last year’s title holder. He beat Danny Coul- ston (CYC A) 21-19, 21-15, 21-19.

Coulston, however, went

on to clinch the open doubles with Mark Horsfall. They beat Stuart Thomson and Andrew Hutchinson 21-12, 21-17, 21-8. The handicap singles title

went to Don Eastwood who beat Coulston 21-12, 21-17, 20-

22, 19-21, 21-14. Team-mates Hutchinson

and Coulston beat Thomson and Horsfall (both Trinity B) 21-

19, 21-18, 21-17. ACADEMICALS signalled their

intention of widening their lead at top of Division Two of the

the Ribble Valley Football League by swinging straight into the attack. Blacktop soon put them in front

with a lob but Waggon asserted their authority and equalised through Bradley. Waddington then chested the ball into the net but the effort was disallowed for handling. A second chance to equalise came with the award of a penalty but Steinhofel’s shot skim-, med the outside of the post. Waggon continued to dictate the

play but could not pierce a defence that mostly numbered 10 men. Taking into account the bumpy and rutted pitch, the quality of football was surprisingly good. Academicals must have felt relieved to go away with a point. Waggon and Horses: Walker,

Collinge, Thornber, Coulston, Mantle, Rigby, Briggs, Bradley, Steinhofel, Driver, Waddington. Academicals Res: Fielding,

“ La T o u r

which was maintained throughout the game. King opened the scoring for the visitors, taking advantage of a defensive slip. The second half saw West Brad

ford put on almost non-stop pressure in order to get the equal iser and eventually did so through a great opportunist goal by Hors field (S). West Bradford continued to press and were unlucky not to take the lead when Briggs forced a good save out of Johnson, the Chatbum 'keeper. West Bradford paid the penalty

for this pressure, when in a Chat- bum breakaway King scored with the defence out of position. Almost immediately Chatbum had the ball in the net only for the goal to be ruled offside. With five minutes left Chatbum

got the ball in the net from an offside position and in a break from the resultant free kick Briggs equalised with a well-taken

goal. In a good all-round performance

special mention should be made of Horsfield (S), Bristol (D) and Swinbank. West Bradford: Barber, Bristol

(D), Swinbank, Wilkes, Mellin (W), Mellin (C), Horsfield (S), Bristol (M), Briggs, Harrison, Horsfield. Sub. Fawcett.

Draw ends sequence

Stamford Utd 1, Waddington 1.

AFTER 18 successive victories Waddington dropped their first point of the season when they visited Stamford United in a midweek game. George Stoddart was recalled to the Waddington team for the first time in two years. A magnificent goal by Roger

Walker, a good second-half display by goalkeeper Dennis Underwood and a resolute defence gave Waddington a. hard-earned but fully deserved draw. W ad d in g to n : Underwood,

Robinson, Leach, Richards, Whiteside (N), Reddin, McGuire, Rimmer, Walker (R), Kirk, Stod dart. Sub: McAlly.

Late winner

Whalley Rangers 3, Wellington Res 2.

AFTER having taken an early lead through Macintosh, Whalley Rangers found themselves trailing with only 15 minutes left and after having had most of this Blackburn Combination Division Four game. However, Bulcock levelled the

scores from the penalty spot and Whalley’s determination to win showed right through to the last minute when Macintosh latched on to a bad back pass. The keeper blocked his shot but

the ball ran loose to Keighley and he netted the winner. It was a good win against strong opposi tion.
